The finalists for the 2014 CBC Short Story Prize have been unveiled and the list includes three writers from B.C, one of whom is a former winner.

The English-language finalists for the prize, which is sponsored by the Canada Council for the Arts, are:

  • Jane Eaton Hamilton of Vancouver for Smiley. The author of seven books, she previously won the prize for The Lost Boy in 2003.
  • Alix Hawley of Kelowna, B.C. for Jumbo. Hawley is a finalist from the 2012 competition and winner of the 2014 Canada Writes Bloodlines competition.
  • Laura Legge of Toronto, for Tukisiviit? Legge has been published in PRISM international and The Malahat Review.
  • Trent Lewin of Waterloo, Ont., for Saad Steps Out. Lewin is an unpublished writer who is currently finishing up his first novel.
  • Annie Reid of Vancouver for Longshot. Reid is a professional video game writer and screenwriter.

From March 10 to 18, the public can read the stories on the Canada Writes website and vote.  

The grand prize winner, one each in English and French, will be announced on March 24.

Each victor receives $6,000, while the four runners-up (in English and in French) will get $1,000 each.

Both grand prize works will be published in enRoute magazine in April, while the winning writers will be offered a two-week writing residency at The Banff Centre in Alberta.
