Mixbit, a new app for recording bite-sized videos and combining them into longer collaborative movies, has been launched by YouTube founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen.

The app, published by Avos Systems Inc. and made available free on iTunes Thursday, allows users to record video clips of up to 16 seconds, which is comparable to Facebook's Instagram (15 seconds) and longer than Twitter's Vine (six seconds), two other popular micro-video services that launched earlier this year.

On the Mixbit website, users have access to their own clips as well as video clips uploaded by others. They have the option to combine up to 256 clips into a video up to 68 minutes long. Even though they play as a single movie when combined, the clips are all stored separately, so they can be remixed and reordered easily into another movie even after the first remix has been published.

"We think video should be a living, breathing entity and that creativity is a collaborative process," said the description on MixBit's iTunes page.

The app is currently only available for Apple devices, but its website promises that an Android version is coming in late September.
