Canadian superhero Captain Canuck rises again

Comic book fans can easily rhyme off names like Superman and The Avengers, but a Canadian team is hoping a new revamp will put Captain Canuck back in the mix.

The Canadian hero, who debuted on comic book shelves almost 40 years ago, is making a comeback in a new animated web series debuting — fittingly — on Canada Day at captaincanuck.com.

Back in the early 1970s, as industry leaders Marvel and DC Comics were putting out stories about Spider-Man, Batman and Superman, Winnipeg-based artist Richard Comely and his artist friend Ron Leishman were wondering why there wasn't yet a Canadian counterpart.

"We would talk and he said 'There should be a Canadian superhero.' I said 'Duh! Yeah! Why isn't there [one]?'" Comely recalled to CBC News.

In 1975, the self-published indie comic Captain Canuck made its debut.

"It was really big, much more than I expected," Comely said. "Canadian media certainly was very interested and so was American media. And it sold very well … it just sold out everywhere."

Though the title eventually lapsed, a new group of creators — with the approval of Comely — is reviving Captain Canuck in an online series, featuring the voice of actor Kris Holden-Ried, best known for TV hits Lost Girl and The Tudors. Laura Vandervoort, Tatiana Maslany and Paul Amos are also taking on voice roles for the initial five-episode run.

In the video above, Richard Comely tells CBC's Eli Glasner about the early days of Captain Canuck.

Marvel favourite Wolverine aside, comic book heroes hailing from Canada have largely been overshadowed by the likes of Spider-Man, The X-Men or Batman. In the photo gallery above, CBC News takes a quick look at more Canadian comic heroes.

Tune in to the July 1 edition of The National as Eli Glasner reports on the super fans propelling the homegrown hero from the comics to the web.

Paul Gross, Ronnie Hawkins among Order of Canada appointees

Actor Paul Gross, former P.E.I. premier Alexander Campbell and legendary rocker Ronnie Hawkins are among 74 appointees to the Order of Canada announced Friday.

The three are among 34 people named as officers of the order, the second-highest grade.

Hawkins's appointment is honorary because although he has lived in Canada for five decades, he remains an American citizen. Hawkins was cited for his contributions to the music industry, as well as for his support of charities.

Other recipients of the designation of officers of the Order of Canada include Céline Galipeau, a news anchor for Radio-Canada, and Olympic rower Marnie McBean.

Galipeau was cited for her "contributions to Canadian journalism, notably as a foreign correspondent."

McBean is best known for earning a pair of gold medals in Barcelona in 1992 and adding a third in Atlanta in 1996.

Toronto filmmaker Deepa Mehta was appointed an officer for her contributions as a groundbreaking screenwriter, director and producer.

CBC's Bernie Lucht was made a member of the Order of Canada for his work in public broadcasting. The award-winning radio producer was commended for providing a "forum for intellectual discourse and debate."

Queen's University biology professor John Smol is being honoured for his work on lake ecosystems.

Quebec actress and singer Carole Laure is another new officer.

The 40 new members of the order include René Angélil, husband and manager of Celine Dion.

Ottawa Rabbi Reuven Bulka, a regular participant at the national Remembrance Day ceremonies, was also named a member.

Ottawa law professor Nathalie Des Rosiers, the general counsel of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, joins as a member.

Two veteran political operatives, Liberal Eddie Goldenberg and Conservative Jodi White, were also named as members of the order.

Clare Drake, who coached University of Alberta hockey teams to a slew of titles, is also a new member.

Retired admiral Larry Murray, who served briefly as acting chief of the defence staff and then became a senior public servant, is another member.

The recipients will be formally invested with their insignia at a later date.

Big Brother's power is building, warns George Orwell biographer

Earlier this month, the most talked about novelist in the English language wasn't Dan Brown, Stephen King or George R. R. Martin and his Game of Thrones series. It was George Orwell, whose most famous novel, 1984, saw its sales spike by a reported 7,000 per cent.

Of course, this happened after Edward Snowden pulled back the curtain on a massive surveillance program in which the U.S. National Security Agency could scour the data on the cellphone and internet activity of U.S. citizens. Terms like Orwellian and Big Brother became ubiquitous in the media and everyday conversation.

That came as no surprise to Michael Shelden, a professor of English at Indiana State University and the author of Orwell: The Authorized Biography.

"People realize that this problem of Big Brother watching you is not going to go away," professor Shelden told The Sunday Edition's guest host, Kevin Sylvester.

Michael Shelden, author of Orwell: The Authorized Biography, says George Orwell was prophetic on the subject of government surveillance capabilities. \Michael Shelden, author of Orwell: The Authorized Biography, says George Orwell was prophetic on the subject of government surveillance capabilities. "Orwell could see how the power would accumulate and would be imposed whether you wanted it imposed or not." (Courtesy Michael Shelden)

"It's an incredible phrase. I think we've taken it for granted for many years, but it probably is one of the most prophetic things said in a novel in the past hundred years."

Orwell, professor Shelden pointed out, is still the reference point whenever stories emerge about surveillance of the public and increasing government controls over civilian populations.

"Orwell is the one who saw this. He's the one who got it right. Orwell could see how the power would accumulate and would be imposed whether you wanted it imposed or not. There was a certain acquiescence, of course, but he once said, 'The object of power is power.'"

But after the initial burst of outrage at the growing appetite of governments for surveillance and data on their citizens in the name of fighting terrorism, there's also a sense that a lot of people are not all that upset. Many people still happily make their private lives very public on social media and pay little heed to the omnipresent security cameras in the public sphere.

And a survey by the Pew Research Centre found that a majority of Americans think that tracking phone records to investigate potential terror threats is more important than the right to privacy.

'"We have a situation now where a lot of people take this kind of intrusion into our private lives increasingly for granted. I don't think we should.'—Michael Shelden

"We have a situation now where a lot of people take this kind of intrusion into our private lives increasingly for granted. I don't think we should," said professor Shelden.

"Orwell wrote 1984 as a warning. He felt that if someone didn't sound the alarm loudly enough, eventually a lot of the freedoms he cherished would be lost, and people would wake up one day and wonder where they'd gone."

You can hear Kevin Sylvester's full interview with Michael Shelden about the vision and continued relevance of George Orwell on The Sunday Edition's site, or through the link at the top-left of this story.

Hanson still rockin' 21 years on

When pop-rock trio Hanson broke out with the late-'90s hit MMMBop, audiences were amazed that Oklahoma brothers Isaac, Taylor and Zac not only performed but also played instruments and wrote their own music — unlike many popular acts of the day.

The brothers attribute the fact that they've always been songwriters and musicians as part of the reason they're still around, more than two decades after they began performing.

"We know what we are and we have from the beginning," Taylor Hanson told CBC News.

"You have to know what you're in it for. You have to start and to be able to finish the day and go 'That was a song that I wrote. That was a show I'm proud of. That was an album cover I can live with.' All of the choices that you make — having the ownership, having it be your art — that is probably one of the biggest things that's allowed us to keep it together and, honestly, to have a relationship with our fans."

Hanson talked to Deana Sumanac about longevity, their devoted fans and celebrating the band's 21st anniversary by unveiling a beer called MMMHops, a play on their hit song.

Marilyn Monroe photographer Bert Stern dies

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 28 Juni 2013 | 22.20

Bert Stern, the photographer best known for his physically and emotionally revealing photo series of Marilyn Monroe taken just weeks before her death, has died at the age of 83.

Stern died Tuesday at his Manhattan home, confirmed his longtime companion Shannah Laumeister, an actress and director of the recent documentary Bert Stern: Original Madman. No cause of death was given.

Born in New York in 1929, Stern was the son of a children's portrait photographer. He went on to serve as an Army photographer stationed in Japan during the Korean War.

Afterward, he worked as magazine art director and commercial photographer. Stern was one of that generation's photographers — alongside peers like Irving Penn and Richard Avedon — who created iconic, arresting photos of the era for glossy publications. His clients ranged from Smirnoff to Spam. He also took the photos that became the memorable movie poster for colleague Stanley Kubrick's controversial film Lolita.

After an earlier marriage to model Teddy Ayer, Stern wedded renowned American ballerina Allegra Kent in 1959. The couple had three children, however the marriage later dissolved amid Stern's infidelities and drug addiction.

Though he photographed a plethora of famous faces over the years — including Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Truman Capote and Twiggy — Stern is most often recalled as the photographer behind The Last Sitting, Marilyn Monroe's final major photo shoot.

During a marathon session in 1962, Stern captured more than 2,600 images of Marilyn Monroe, many of them nude or semi-nude. Six weeks after the shoot, the Hollywood starlet was dead. (Bert Stern/Associated Press)

In 1962, Stern spent a marathon three days capturing images of the Hollywood starlet at the Hotel Bel-Air. Commissioned by Vogue magazine, the session resulted in more than 2,600 photos. Though undoubtedly alluring and sensual, the images show a world-weary Monroe. The actress had divorced third husband Arthur Miller a year earlier, had been fired from Something's Got to Give and was struggling with an addiction to prescription pills and alcohol.

Still, "she was so beautiful at that time," Stern recalled of the session — which included many photos of Monroe unclothed or nearly nude — in an interview with Newsday.

Six weeks later, Monroe was dead and Vogue eventually published the series as a tribute. Stern himself published the photos, outtakes and contact sheets from the session in his 1982 book Marilyn Monroe: The Complete Last Sitting (republished in 2000). He recreated the famed shoot with actress Lindsay Lohan in 2008 for a New York magazine feature.

Stern's work is held in collections of individuals, art galleries and museums worldwide and his photos have inspired a host of exhibitions. In addition to his photography, Stern also directed the seminal 1959 doc Jazz on a Summer's Day, about the Newport Jazz Festival, with film editor and director Aram Avakian.

A funeral service is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Friday in New York.

Monty Python member, world traveller Michael Palin

Though most think of Michael Palin as one of the hilarious members of Monty Python, the British actor, comedian and writer has also developed a reputation as a respected world traveller.

The 70-year-old Palin has crossed the globe many times over the past 30 years and shared his many treks with viewers and readers through his TV documentaries and travel writing.

This week, Palin is being honoured by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society with a gold medal for promoting geographic literacy.

He talked to CBC's Jelena Adzic about fond memories of Canada and offered up a musical salute.

FILM REVIEW: The Heat

After her breakout role in Bridesmaids , Melissa McCarthy solidifies her leap from ensemble player to co-starring lead in The Heat, a new cop comedy that matches her up with Sandra Bullock (and also reunites her with Bridesmaids director Paul Feig). The story finds uptight FBI agent Sarah Ashburn forced to partner with rude and crude Boston police detective Shannon Mullins to catch a murderous drug lord. While Ashburn is an aspiring cat lady who quashes her loneliness with arrogance and ambition, Mullins is the street smart officer who keeps her fridge stocked with ammo and rocket-propelled grenades. Complex characters they're not; luckily Bullock and McCarthy are pros at this sort of silliness.

As Mullins, McCarthy is clothed in a wall of vulgarity, saddled with a mullet-like hair-don't and a desexualizing wardrobe. Bullock is in familiar territory here playing the prim and proper agent who learns to let her Spanx down. Perhaps because we've seen this act from her before (Miss Congeniality 1 and 2), it's McCarthy who steals the show in The Heat. There's still something amusing watching her apple-cheeked Midwestern face spewing profanities that would make Richard Pryor blush.

It's a shame, however, that scribe Katie Dippold (a writer for TV's Parks and Rec) doesn't do much with the fact that both women have isolated themselves by intimidating their male work colleagues. Instead, The Heat makes time for the requisite, over-the-top, Bridesmaids-esque set piece: a queasy medical intervention at a diner, with Ashburn yelling "The blood, the blood!" as Mullins retches.

One might wonder about the street tough Mullins being so sensitive, but pondering consistency in this police comedy won't get you far. Where Bridesmaids was a natural setting for an emerging Delta Force of funny females, setting Feig's brand of character-based comedy in this context isn't as easy a fit. We're in buddy cop territory: light on the cop, heavy on the buddies. While we do get a few great bonding moments, like a crash course in dressing down at a local night club or a raging all-nighter at the local dive bar, The Heat also features a criminal waste of the great Jane Curtin. Still, the movie does confirm McCarthy as a comic who makes the most of her material.

Rating: 3 out of 5
