Spotify streaming music service launches in Canada

Online streaming music service Spotify is now available in Canada, five years after the Swedish company announced plans to expand.

Though many other companies now offer a similar service, Spotify was a pioneer in stickhandling the thorny landscape of digital music rights by coming up with a system whereby users simply stream the music they want, without having to pay to own them outright via downloading — or buy entire albums they had no interest in simply for one song.

The compromise helped keep a lid on illegal downloading by coming up with a price point that was financially acceptable to both music listeners and music creators.

A number of competitors offering virtually the same service have launched in Canada in recent years, including Deezer, Rara, Rdio, Slacker and Google Play Music.

As of Tuesday, Spotify customers can pay a monthly fee for a premium all-access account to the company's catalogue of 20 million songs or sign up for a limited ad-supported service for free. The company says it has 40 million customers worldwide, of which one quarter pay for the premium service.

Spotify had indicated in 2009 that it was looking to move into Canada within months but never did until now.

Andres Sehr, Spotify's marketing director, wouldn't say why it took so long for the service to launch in Canada.

They did. They Do. Clooney, Alamuddin have wedding No. 2 in Venice

George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin said "I do" for a second time Monday, celebrating a civil wedding ceremony in Venice's City Hall on the Grand Canal, greeted by hundreds of well-wishers who waited hours for a glimpse of the newlyweds.

The couple tied the knot two days earlier in a private ceremony attended by Hollywood celebrity friends and family in a luxury hotel. They followed up with a required civil procedure, which to be legally recognized must take place on a site designated by the city administration.

The newlyweds arrived at the pre-Renaissance Ca' Farsetti in Clooney's regular water taxi, called "Amore," trailed by dozens of boats with photographers, as has been the case all weekend. Police boats tried to clear their way.

The picture of glamour

Clooney, 53, looked dapper in a grey suit and matching tie, while the bride, 36, wore a cream-coloured, short-sleeved jacket with palazzo pants and a matching wide-brimmed hat accented by a navy ribbon.

As they exited the boat, Clooney drew his wife's attention to the crowds on the opposite shore, and they stopped briefly to take in the scene and wave. Clooney then ushered Alamuddin inside, looking up at city employees watching from the surrounding buildings and pointing inside with his thumb as if to say, "I gotta go."

They emerged about 20 minutes later with former Rome Mayor Walter Veltroni, who performed both ceremonies. Veltroni sent the couple off, hugging Clooney and kissing Alamuddin on the cheek.

They continued up the Grand Canal and under the arched Rialto Bridge, crowded with more well-wishers screaming "George, George," before disappearing up a one-way canal. Clooney's water taxi driver, who has ferried the actor around on his frequent trips to Venice, was later seen at the airport and indicated that the couple had left.

One of the world's most romantic cities, Venice draws couples from around the world for a fairy tale wedding in well-appointed official wedding halls overlooking the Grand Hotel. According to official statistics for this year, 323 non-Italian couples were married in Venice's historic centre through Monday.

Love in the lagoon city

A city employee, who identified herself only as Luisa, said she leaves her window overlooking the Cavalli Palazzo, where most ceremonies take place, open in the summer just so she can hear the parade of newlyweds being congratulated by loved ones.

"There are so many beautiful brides. Every 10 or 15 minutes, they come out and people throw confetti or rose petals," Luisa said, standing with a group of co-workers who came outside to see Clooney and his bride arrive. "Once there was even a Scotsman in a kilt. Often we find champagne bottles and glasses here in the morning."

The last couple to exchange vows before the Hollywood star and his new bride arrived was Stefanie Eddinger and Gerald Frieder, from Vienna. The couple enjoyed the added energy from the crowd outside awaiting the celebrity newlyweds.

"They picked our day," Frieder said, before stepping outside into a shower of confetti.

Wal-Mart cites Tracy Morgan's failure to wear seatbelt for crash injuries

Actor-comedian Tracy Morgan and other people in a limousine struck from behind by a Wal-Mart truck on a highway in June are at least partly to blame for their injuries because they weren't wearing seatbelts, the company said in a court filing Monday.

The filing was made in federal court in response to a lawsuit Morgan filed in July over the accident, which killed his friend James McNair, who was accompanying the former Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock star back from a show in Delaware. Morgan spent several weeks in rehab with rib and leg injuries.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., based in Arkansas, said in the filing that the passengers' injuries were caused "in whole or in part" by their "failure to properly wear an appropriate available seatbelt restraint device," which it said constitutes unreasonable conduct.

An attorney representing Morgan and the other plaintiffs called Wal-Mart's contentions "surprising and appalling."

"It's disingenuous," attorney Benedict Morelli said. "It's not what they said they were going to do initially, which was take full responsibility. I'm very upset, not for myself but for the families I represent."

The lawsuit seeks a jury trial and punitive and compensatory damages. It says the retail giant should have known that its truck driver had been awake for more than 24 hours before the crash and that his commute of 1,125 kilometres from his home in Georgia to work in Delaware was "unreasonable." It also alleges the driver fell asleep at the wheel.

Wal-Mart spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said in an email that the company "continues to stand willing to work with Mr. Morgan and the other plaintiffs to resolve this matter."

Passengers Ardley Fuqua and Jeffrey Millea and Millea's wife, Krista Millea, also are named as plaintiffs in the lawsuit. Krista Millea was not in the limousine when the crash occurred but is a plaintiff because she has a related loss-of-services lawsuit stemming from the crash.

Truck driver Kevin Roper, of Georgia, pleaded not guilty to death by auto and assault by auto charges in state court. A criminal complaint also accuses him of not sleeping for more than 24 hours before the crash, a violation of New Jersey law.

A report by federal transportation safety investigators said Roper was driving 105 kilometres per hour in the minute before he slammed into the limo van. The speed limit on that stretch of the New Jersey Turnpike is 88 km/h and was lowered to 72 km/h that night because of construction.

Roper had been on the job about 13 ½ hours at the time of the crash, the report concluded. Federal rules permit truck drivers to work up to 14 hours a day, with a maximum of 11 hours behind the wheel.

Netflix takes stab at big screen with Crouching Tiger sequel

Netflix and the Weinstein Company are teaming up to release the sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon simultaneously on Netflix and Imax theatres next summer.

The deal, announced Monday, represents a coup for the digital streaming service as it levels a blow against Hollywood's exhibitors and their traditional stranglehold on movie releases.

"Fans will have unprecedented choice in how they enjoy an amazing and memorable film that combines intense action and incredible beauty," Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said in a joint statement cited in Variety magazine.

Harvey Weinstein, co-chairman of TWC, characterized the move as responding to a media industry in flux:

"The moviegoing experience is evolving quickly and profoundly, and Netflix is unquestionably at the forefront of that movement," the statement read.

Netflix and the Weinstein Company are also working on a drama series about Italian explorer Marco Polo.

Netflix has given traditional television networks a run for their money with their original and Emmy-nominated programs such as Orange is the New Black and House of Cards.

Now, with its first of several feature films coming down the pipes, Netflix is in play for the film industries' coveted Academy Awards.

Crouching Tiger director Ang Lee is not signed to direct the long-awaited sequel to his Oscar-winning blockbuster.

The followup, titled Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend, will this time be helmed by famed martial-arts choreographer Yuen Wo-Ping.

Michelle Yeoh is set to reprise her starring role as wise warrior woman Yu Shu Lien.

The Green Legend will hit Imax theatres and Netflix starting Aug. 28.

Netflix subscribers will be able to stream it at no additional cost.

New McMaster lab will look at how a musician's brain works

Written By Unknown on Senin, 29 September 2014 | 22.20

When a musician nods her head or takes a breath, she's often sending a signal to her partner performers.

A new lab at McMaster aims to study some of those unspoken communication gestures and movements. The university's new LIVELab combines 3D motion-capture technology, acoustic controls and brain-monitoring sensors to trace some of the under-studied parts of human communication, especially as it's translated between musicians and a live audience.

Saturday was the LIVELab's grand opening, and performances to demonstrate the motion capture technology and the brainwave sensors were so popular the audience had to take shifts coming into the hall.

"For what they're doing here, [LIVELab is] number 1 in the world," said Dan India, a vice president with Swedish motion-capture company Qualisys, who came to town from Chicago for the opening events.

McMaster researcher Laurel Trainor said the applications for the lab are numerous. Its acoustic manoeuvrability means hearing aid researchers could work out kinks in new designs. The motion capture or brainwave monitors could help Parkinson's or autism researchers determine human reactions to music and sound.

Trainor is director of the McMaster Institute for Music & the Mind and professor in the department of Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour.

The $8 million lab has been nearly a decade in the works. Saturday, members of Ensemble Vivant performed a few different genres of music while hooked up to motion and brain sensors. Behind them, the audience could see some streams of raw data collected by the instruments.

"We can start to ask big research questions like: How do musicians interact with each other?" Trainor said. "How do they coordinate to play together and how do their brains accomplish that? How do audiences react? And how does the energy from audiences affect performers? Now we can really start to understand how these complex dynamics take place."

Canada's Smartest Person is 'out of control' says show's co-host

Intelligence is about more than IQ tests and final exams—at least that's what Jessi Cruickshank is out to prove as the host of CBC's new series, Canada's Smartest Person.

The 9-part season will see 32 of Canada's brightest minds go head-to-head in a series of challenging tests until only one person remains.

"The challenges we're making these people do are kind of out of control," said Cruickshank. "We're taking it all over the map and that's what makes it so fun."

Unlike average quiz shows, Cruickshank says Canada's Smartest Person throws out old theories of determining intelligence. Instead, the competition breaks things down into six major facets: linguistic, visual, musical, social, logical and physical.

Canada's Smartest Person

Canada's Smartest Person premieres Sunday at 8 pm ET (8:30 NT) on CBC-TV. Viewers at home can play along by downloading CBC's Canada's Smartest Person app. (CBC)

To truly be 'smart', contestants must be well-rounded and have a little bit of intelligence in each category.

"It's a whole new way of measuring intelligence. And for us, it's a really fun way of measuring it," said Cruickshank.

The challenges will cover everything from a lie detector test to an electronic dance challenge to a motivational speech, where contestants must convince a peewee hockey team to get up and get inspired to win.

Viewers at home can play along with the competitors and test their own brains by downloading CBC's Canada's Smartest Person app, available in the App Store and in the Google Play Store, or by visiting the Canada's Smartest Person website.

Canada's Smartest Person premieres Sunday at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) with a special two-hour episode.

Justin Bieber charged in Ontario 3:05

Justin Bieber's dangerous driving and assault case is due before a Stratford, Ont. court Monday, but the Canadian pop star isn't expected to appear.

The charges stem from a collision last month between an ATV and a minivan on a country road near the home of Bieber's father.

Police wouldn't say whether Bieber was driving the ATV, but pictures posted by TMZ show the 20-year-old and on-again, off-again girlfriend Selena Gomez riding the 4-wheeler. Bieber's lawyer, Brian H. Greenspan, blamed the incident on the "unwelcome presence of paparazzi."

Monday's hearing is the latest in a long string of legal troubles for the young celebrity:

  • Earlier this month, the Crown dropped an assault charge against Bieber that was filed in connection with an alleged attack on a Toronto limousine driver.
  • In July, Bieber pleaded no contest to misdemeanour vandalismand had to pay $80,900 in restitution to a neighbour whose house was egged in Calabasas, Calif. He was sentenced to probation of two years.
  • Last month, a case was resolved in Florida, where Bieber had initially been accused of street racing. He pleaded guilty to lesser charges and was required to take an anger management course, make a $50,000 charitable contribution and pay court fees.
  • Reports emerged this summer alleging Bieber had been involved in an altercation with actor Orlando Bloom at a restaurant in Ibiza, Spain.

Replica of 'cursed' painting comes to Calgary's Glenbow Museum

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 28 September 2014 | 22.19

A painting, which is rumoured to be cursed, is being unveiled in Calgary this weekend.

Edwin Landseer's Man Proposes, God Disposes depicts polar bears gnawing on a wrecked ship and human bones from the doomed Franklin expedition.

Although the painting arriving in Calgary is a replica, the original hangs in the picture gallery at the University of London's Royal Holloway.

There have been rumours for years that it caused students there to fail exams — and even made one student go mad in the 1980s and commit suicide. There is no record of the event, where the student supposedly wrote "the polar bears made me do it" during an exam, but the legend exists today.

"We think somewhere around the '20s, '30s or '40s [it started] and the rumour was that if you sat in front of it, you would fail your exams," said Laura MacCulloch, a curator at the university.

  • Hear the full interview with the CBC's Calgary Eyeopener host David Gray by clicking the "Listen" button above.

"I think it's the subject. I think it is these two polar bears and one of them having a go at the human remains and the story of Franklin and how he disappeared with his men. I guess that's where it comes from."

While it may just be rumours, the university even started covering the painting with a Union Jack flag during exams.

"We quite like the tradition now," said MacCulloch. "It's part of us, and all of our alumni get quite excited and feel nostalgic about it because they remember being one of the students sitting there seeing the painting covered over with a flag."

The painting is being included in a new feature at the Glenbow Museum.

The exhibit is called Vanishing Ice: Alpine and Polar Landscapes in Art and opens Saturday.

"It's quite a grisly painting.... It was meant to show the horror of the expedition that went wrong," said MacCulloch.

George Clooney keeps rumour mill whirling after Venice wedding

Newly married Hollywood heart-throb George Clooney kept rumour mills whirling in Venice on Sunday as media reported he and his Lebanese-born wife were planning a second ceremony in Italy's floating city.

The man once dubbed the world's most eligible bachelor bid goodbye to single life on Saturday and married human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin in a private ceremony at the seven-star Aman hotel on the Grand Canal, Clooney's representative said.

The two left the Aman on a wooden speedboat appropriately called Amore on Sunday afternoon, headed for the famed Cipriani hotel, where they were expected to have a late lunch.

Clooney, 53, wearing a light grey suit, and the 36-year-old Amal, wearing a short, white flower-patterned dress with lace around the shoulders, waved at a swarm of photographers in boats and well wishers on bridges as the boat slowly plied the waters of the canal towards the Cipriani on the Giudecca Island.

Speculation about more celebrations to come spread after the local government said it would close a number of streets around Venice's 14th-century Ca' Farsetti town hall on Monday.

'George and Amal: the first 'I do' is fiction.'— Local paper Il Gazzettino

"George and Amal: the first 'I do' is fiction, tomorrow the [real] wedding at Ca' Farsetti," said local paper Il Gazzettino following Saturday's star-studded dinner at which the pair were reported to have said informal wedding vows.

While the Clooney camp has been tight-lipped, local and national media reported that Monday's ceremony would be officiated by Rome's former mayor Walter Veltroni, who is a film buff and friend of Clooney's.

The weekend extravaganza has been billed as the party of the year even as details remained secret and lavish receptions and dinners at luxurious hotels were shielded from prying eyes and photographer's long lenses.

Clooney, a two-time Oscar winner, was the talk of the town after welcoming A-list guests including actors Matt Damon and Bill Murray, model Cindy Crawford and singer Bono to a drinks reception and gala dinner on Saturday night.

"Everybody's been talking about it, everywhere we went today it was just 'Clooney, Clooney, Clooney'," said Canadian art intern Megan Ho, 23, standing opposite the hotel where the dinner took place.

Alamuddin has kept a lower profile than her new groom during the weekend's festivities, stepping out first in a black-and-white striped dress on a water taxi on Friday, before appearing in a more formal red dress that evening.

Alamuddin has represented former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in legal proceedings. She has also advised former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on Syria, an issue about which Clooney has spoken publicly.

Clooney has also campaigned to draw attention to the plight of refugees in Darfur, Sudan, and the couple is expected to donate to that cause the fees earned from selling rights to the wedding photos to American Vogue magazine, whose editor-in-chief Anna Wintour attended the event.

The Kentucky-born Clooney  had vowed never to remarry after his 1993 divorce from actress Talia Balsam and is said to have made a $100,000 bet with Michelle Pfeiffer that he would stay single.

Denzel Washington in The Equalizer 2:21

Denzel Washington fights for underdog justice in The Equalizer, the much-hyped new action thriller from Training Day director Antoine Fuqua.

The big screen adaptation of the 1980s TV classic is in theatres this weekend.

But when Denzel Washington fans see the Hollywood star, best known for his puppy dog-eyed tough guys, step into the shoes of retired CIA agent Robert MacCall, they may be left wondering where his charm went—even when he's fighting for the honour of a young prostitute, played by Kick Ass star Chloë Grace Moretz.

While the last Fuqua-Washington match up, Training Day, saw the actor pick up a golden statuette at the Oscars, all we're likely to see Washington pick up this time is a blood-spattered mallet, according to CBC's film critic, Eli Glasner.

George Clooney, fiancée arrive in Venice for wedding

George Clooney and his fiancée Amal Alamuddin arrived in Venice on Friday for their weekend wedding extravaganza, accompanied by loved ones and trailed by a clutch of photographers who recorded their passage along the picturesque Grand Canal.

The couple arrived at a Venice water-taxi stop by bus, accompanied by a small group of guests who included the groom's parents, as well as Cindy Crawford and her husband. Two small vans contained luggage.

The entire group boarded the water taxi piloted by Clooney's regular water-taxi driver, who took the wedding party on a scenic tour down the Grand Canal, passing in front of the Renaissance-era Cavalli Palace where the couple is expected to be wed in a civil ceremony on Monday.

Clooney and his bride stood outside during the water-taxi ride, and he waved to well-wishers as they passed under the famed Rialto Bridge. The water journey ended at the luxury Cipriani Hotel, Clooney's usual residence when in Venice, on an island opposite St. Mark's Square.

The arrival of other celebrities in Venice on Friday indicated star-studded festivities were in the making. Those spotted included Clooney's cousin Miguel Ferrer, Matt Damon, Ellen Barkin and Richard Kind.

Clooney, 53, and Alamuddin, 36, have not publicly divulged details of the celebrations, although Venice city officials have announced the closure of a 50-meter length of pedestrian way along the famed Grand Canal where the Cavalli Palace is located for two hours on Monday.

Media have speculated that the couple will have two ceremonies — one on Saturday followed by a civil ceremony Monday.

The Boxtrolls' director, Canadian animator Graham Annable, says this new story was just made for stop motion.

"There's something about the steampunk Victorian era that utilizes materials like none of the others have," Annable told CBC News.

"You can just feel all the textures in every frame that you look at."

The Long Dark video game: Can you survive Canada post-disaster?

You're alone in Canada's remote North, food and water are scarce, early winter is biting at your delicate human flesh and — in a situation that strikes terror into the heart of every tech-loving gamer — a global disaster has rendered all electronic devices utterly useless.

That's the premise behind The Long Dark, the first title from Vancouver Island game developers Hinterland Games.

The Long Dark

The Long Dark challenges gamers to see how long they'll survive as stranded bush pilot William Mackenzie. (Hinterland Games)

The first-person survival game draws players into the dangerous footsteps of stranded bush pilot William Mackenzie (a shout-out to Canada's 10th prime minister, perhaps) who faces brutal Canadian conditions with only his wits and supplies scavenged from his surroundings.

"It's a fairly deep simulation," explains Raphael van Lierop, Hinterland's founder and creative director.

"You're tracking your calories and you're worried about body temperature, when you're going to eat and when you need to drink water."

A newer feature allows users to select either a male or female protagonist.

Wild early response

An early access version of The Long Dark debuted earlier this week on Steam — a popular PC gaming platform and storefront — and, as of this writing, it's already among the site's top three bestsellers.

Critical reaction from players who spent $19.99 US to suffer certain digital death seems largely favourable, with the biggest criticism being the looming threat of ravenous wolves.

  • On mobile? Read The Long Dark Twitter reaction here, here and here.

Despite the promise of a desperately short life expectancy, van Lierop says players are eating it up.

"One of the things we're really hearing from our fans right now is that they love the level of challenge, they love the fact that when they have success, it's their own success."

Survival: an enduring trend

From TV's The Walking Dead, to the hugely successful Hunger Games film franchise, survival as a genre is thriving.

Popular video games like DayZ, and State of Decay draw on the audience's desire to test their mettle in a post-apocalyptic setting from the safety of their own homes.

But unlike the online multiplayer struggles in DayZ, and the community-building skills needed to outlive the undead in State of Decay, The Long Dark was specifically designed to be a solo affair.

"We don't have zombies," boasts van Lierop.

"It's more of a deeply pensive experience where you're wandering around in this beautiful world while worrying about keeping yourself from freezing and starving to death."

If you're going to die, die in Canada

Nestled in Vancouver Island's Comox Valley, Hinterland Games' headquarters is set in one of Canada's most stunning landscapes. It's no accident that the studio's inaugural game reflects its raw and beautiful birthplace.

Raphael van Lierop

Raphael van Lierop is the founder and creative director of Hinterland Studio Inc. The Vancouver Island video game studio expects to launch the full version of its Canadian-set survival game The Long Dark by the end of the year. (Hinterland Studios Inc.)

"I've worked on many projects," explains the veteran game developer, "where you're discouraged from putting any personal cultural references in because you don't want to alienate people that don't come from that country."

If he was holding back before, the newly independent developer is raising his Maple Leaf up high with The Long Dark.

"I was thinking about Margaret Atwood's book Survival and how it's a part of this Canadian mentality of being a small bastion against this massive expanse of wilderness pushing down on you, and I think that's what we're creating here."

Canadians, or anyone else who wants see how well they'd fare north of the 49th (post-apocalypse, of course) can check out The Long Dark's early release on Steam.

The full version is expected by the end of the year.

Diana Krall cancels fall tour due to severe pneumonia

The 49-year-old Canadian jazz performer says she's 'under doctor's orders to rest'

The Associated Press Posted: Sep 25, 2014 11:50 AM ET Last Updated: Sep 25, 2014 1:43 PM ET

Jazz pianist and singer Diana Krall is cancelling her U.S. fall tour to give herself time to recuperate from a severe case of pneumonia.

Krall, in a statement released Thursday by her publicist, says she's "deeply saddened" about the postponement, but is "under doctor's orders to rest for the next few months in order to regain my strength and good health."

The tour was scheduled to kick off Nov. 7 in Phoenix, and new tour dates will be announced later.

Krall also is putting off the release of her new album, Wallflower, from Oct. 21 to Feb. 3.

On the CD, Krall breaks new ground for herself by interpreting a collection of pop songs from the 1960s to the present day by the Mamas and the Papas, the Eagles, Bob Dylan and Elton John as well as a new song by Paul McCartney.

George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin to wed Monday in Venice

Venice city officials on Thursday ordered the closure of a walkway fronting the picturesque Grand Canal on Monday to keep crowds away from George Clooney's wedding to human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin.

The city order closes pedestrian access to walkways accessing the 16th-Century Cavalli Palace for at least two hours Monday, citing "the George Clooney wedding." The order is the first official indication of the timing of the nuptials.

Clooney revealed earlier this month at a star-studded benefit in Florence that he would marry Alamuddin in the lagoon city, but refrained from giving the date. Press reports have speculated that the couple would have two ceremonies, one on Saturday followed by a civil ceremony on Monday.

A Venice city official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said police requested the closure to prevent crowds from gathering and creating a safety risk. The official said such closures have taken place previously for both public and private events.

Only city offices are affected by the closure area, not businesses that cater to tourists, the official said.

The Renaissance-era Cavalli Palace is used as a venue for civil marriage ceremonies, with rooms offering views of the Grand Canal and the famed Rialto Bridge. The palace can be accessed by gondola for the most "exciting arrival," the Venice city website notes.

Clooney owns a lakeside villa in northern Italy and has been a frequent visitor to Venice, notably to premier movies at the annual film festival.

Clooney, 53, and Alamuddin, 36, a Beirut-born British national based in London, posted the required legal notice in Britain last month, declaring their intention to marry abroad, specifically in Italy.

It's his second marriage and her first.

Watch Eli's full review in the video above, and watch Washington and Fuqua discuss the motivation for Washington's character with CBC Arts Reporter Zukekha Nathoo in the attached video.

Rod Stewart fan says singer broke his nose with ball

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 25 September 2014 | 22.19

A soccer ball kicked into the crowd at a Las Vegas concert has bounced back to Rod Stewart in the form of a lawsuit by a Southern California man who says he has lingering injuries after his nose was broken.

Mostafa Kashe's civil negligence complaint alleges that he didn't expect to be hit in the face by a ball kicked by the raspy-voiced British singer from the stage during a show at the Caesars Palace resort in October 2012.

Representatives of Stewart, promoter AEG Live and Caesars Entertainment Corp. didn't immediately comment Wednesday on the lawsuit filed against them Monday in Nevada.

Michael Roth, of AEG Live, said his firm had not yet been served with the complaint.

Kashe, 53, an electrical engineer from Diamond Bar, California, seeks unspecified damages of at least $10,000 plus attorney fees.

His attorney, Larry Weinsteen, said Kashe and his wife were big Stewart fans who travelled to Las Vegas primarily for the concert.

The lawyer said his client was treated by a hotel medic and filed an injury report with Caesars before being left with "substantial" injuries including an impaired sense of smell.

Stewart is known for hits including Maggie May and Tonight's the Night.

The 69-year-old London-born rocker also is a longtime soccer fan and club league player. He frequently kicks autographed balls into the audience at his shows.

Emma Watson nude photo threat was a marketing stunt

The Emma Watson nude photo threat appears to have been the work of a viral marketing firm calling itself Rantic.com.

The ominous threat first appeared on 4chan over the weekend, sometime after the British actor and UN Women's goodwill ambassador launched her HeForShe campaign for gender equality at the United Nations in New York City.

The threatening message on Emmayouarnext.com has since been replaced with a message calling for 4Chan to be shut down. (Emmayouarenext.com)

The threat linked to a website titled Emma You Are Next featuring a countdown clock ticking down to a suggested nude photo reveal within a number of days.

In the early hours of Wednesday, the sinister notice was replaced. Instead, the URL redirects to Rantic.com, a mysterious social media marketing company and its campaign to shut down 4chan — the image-sharing site at the centre of a number of recent celebrity nude photo leaks.

"None of these women deserve this," reads Rantic.com's splash page. "[A]nd together we can make a change."

It's not clear who is behind Rantic, or if the Harry Potter star is participating in the campaign, but a strongly worded statement on the supposed marketing firm's website claims celebrity backing.

"We have been hired by celebrity publicists to bring this disgusting issue to attention," reads a message addressed to U.S. President Barack Obama.

"The recent 4chan celebrity nude leaks in the past 2 months have been an invasion of privacy and is also clear indication that the internet NEEDS to be censored."

The campaign encourages visitors to send a letter to the White House demanding government action over the nude celebrity photo leaks.

Whether the stunt can generate government action is yet to be seen, but the internet pranksters are already claiming a viral victory.

Rantic says its Watson stunt spawned massive social media pickup, generating 48 million visitors and seven million Facebook shares in a few short days.

The Simpsons, Family Guy rape joke draws protest against Fox

The Fox network isn't responding to suggestions that it edit its upcoming crossover episode of The Simpsons and Family Guy to remove a joke where the punch line is "your sister's being raped."

The line appears in Sunday's much-awaited special where Bart Simpson and his family hang around with Stewie and the rest of the Family Guy crew, and has already circulated in a trailer for the episode that Fox released online over the summer.

The Simpsons

It punctuates a scene in which the incorrigible Bart is instructing Stewie Griffin in the art of the prank phone call. Bart dials the owner of Moe's Tavern and asks whether there is anyone there with the last name Keybum, first name Lee. When Moe calls out to his patrons, asking for a "leaky bum," everyone gets a laugh.

Stewie thinks that's cool, and asks to make his own prank call.

"Hello, Moe?" he says. "Your sister's being raped."

Kids advocate not laughing

Tim Winter, president of the advocacy group Parents Television Council, said he's a longtime fan of Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons, and sought out the trailer when it was released.

"I was blown out of my shoes when I saw the scene with the rape joke in it," Winter said. "It really troubled me."

He said he found it particularly offensive in the context of stories about sexual assaults on college campuses and, most recently, talk about abusive treatment of women by some players in the National Football League. He said when rape is accepted as a punch line for a joke in entertainment, "it becomes less outrageous in real life."

Winter said he wrote to Groening, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane and Fox in August, asking that the joke be removed when the episode is shown on television. He said he received no reply.

No comment from Fox

Fox's entertainment division, through a spokeswoman, said it would not comment on the criticism or whether there are any second thoughts about the joke.

Katherine Hull Fliflet, spokeswoman for the Washington-based Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, said she did not find the line offensive.

Stewie Griffin and Bart Simpson

"I think the show is making it clear that rape is not funny by how they are positioning the joke," Fliflet said. "It's my hope that would be the viewers' take-away."

RAINN, which says it is the nation's largest anti-sexual assault organization and operates a rape hotline, works with creators in Hollywood to help them depict sexual assault realistically. The group lists actress Christina Ricci as a national spokesperson.

MacFarlane thinks 'it's pretty funny'

The National Organization for Women didn't respond to requests for comment on the Fox comedies.

MacFarlane brought up the line during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, predicting he will get attacked for it in the media. "But in context," he said, "it's pretty funny."

Winter said he didn't think the subject was worth joking about, and said he was particularly concerned about its exposure to younger viewers who may be fans of The Simpsons, but are not familiar with the Family Guy style of comedy.

"We don't mock certain groups because we realize that it is highly insensitive and morally wrong," he said. "Why wouldn't we do the same thing about sexual assault?"

Cat Stevens nixes New York show after 'extortionate' scalper resales

Musician blamed state requirement for paper tickets on exorbitant resale ticket prices

The Associated Press Posted: Sep 25, 2014 8:26 AM ET Last Updated: Sep 25, 2014 8:26 AM ET

Cat Stevens is cancelling his New York performance just weeks after announcing a six-city tour starting in Toronto on Dec. 1.

Stevens said on his Facebook page Wednesday that he would not keep the New York engagement because its requirement for paper tickets has led to exorbitant resale prices.

Stevens, also known as Yusuf, the name he claimed after converting to Islam, said earlier this month that he planned a concert tour behind the blues album he's releasing on Oct. 27.

The concerts are his first series of shows in North America since 1976.

Stevens says he is a longtime supporter of paperless tickets "and avoiding scalpers," and hopes to return to New York City in the future. He will instead perform in Philadelphia on Dec. 4.

Other cities on the Peace Train ... Late Again tour include Boston, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Paulina Gretzky says she's pregnant

Wayne Gretzky is going to be a grandfather.

Paulina Gretzky, daughter of the NHL Hall of Famer, announced Tuesday on her Instagram account that she and fiance, PGA golfer Dustin Johnson, are expecting their first child.

The 25-year-old posted a photo of herself cradling her belly, with the caption: (at)djohnsonpga & i are so excited to finally share with you all our amazing news..we're having a baby!!"

Younger brother Trevor Gretzky, a minor leaguer in the Los Angeles Angels' organization, followed up by tweeting "Uncle Trev," along with the same photo.

Gretzky and Johnson announced their engagement in August 2013.

Earlier this year, Paulina drew some controversy by appearing on the cover of Golf Digest Magazine, posing in skintight capris and a bra.

The provocative photo caused a stir in the golf community, with LPGA Tour Commissioner Mike Whan weighing in to say he was "disappointed and frustrated" with the cover.

Johnson is on a leave of absence from the golf tour.

Startling Phil Spector photos released from prison

Two newly released photos of Phil Spector show the toll of age and prison on the once flamboyant music legend.

The most recent photo shows a bald, sombre-looking 73-year-old Spector staring straight into the camera on Oct. 28, 2013. An earlier photo of a smiling Spector is dated July 24, 2013.

California Department of Corrections spokeswoman Terry Thornton said Tuesday that the October photo was taken when Spector was moved to the prison system's huge California Heath Care Facility in Stockton. The facility provides medical and mental health care to the state's sickest inmates, including those with chronic conditions.

Back in May 2005, during his trial in Los Angeles, the flamboyant music producer Phil Spector was looking much healthier. ( Damian Dovarganes/ File/The Associated Press)

Thornton said she couldn't reveal details of Spector's health because of state medical privacy regulations. He is serving 19 years to life for the 2003 killing of actress Lana Clarkson.

The legendary music producer revolutionized rock music with his "Wall of Sound" before his genius was eclipsed by decades of bizarre behaviour that culminated in his conviction for murder. He claimed he was innocent and his defence team argued that Clarkson, despondent over a fading acting career, killed herself at his castle-like home.

His appearance in bizarre wigs at his trials and testimony about violent behaviour tarnished his reputation as a musical genius who created the "Wall of Sound" that merged beautiful vocal harmonies with lavish orchestral arrangements to produce such pop hits as Da Doo Ron Ron, Be My Baby and He's a Rebel. His production of the Righteous Brothers' version of You've Lost that Loving Feeling remains a classic.

His first jury deadlocked, but a second one found him guilty of second-degree murder in 2009 six years after Clarkson's death. By then, he had married his much-younger wife, Rachelle, who was at his side throughout the trials and continues to live at the mansion and visits him in prison.

Kris Jenner is ending her 22-year year marriage to Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner.

The Keeping Up With the Kardashians matriarch filed for divorce on Monday in Los Angeles, citing irreconcilable differences.

The pair's relationship and its troubles have been featured prominently on the reality show that focuses heavily on Kris Jenner's daughters from a previous marriage, Kourtney, Kim and Khloe Kardashian.

The women and their brother Rob were born during Kris Jenner's previous marriage to Los Angeles attorney Robert Kardashian, who she divorced in 1991.

Kris and Bruce Jenner have two children together, daughters Kendall and Kylie. The divorce petition seeks joint custody of 17-year-old Kylie Jenner.

Bruce Jenner won the gold medal for men's decathlon in the 1976 Olympics.

Court filings say he and Kris Jenner separated on June 1. The filings do not provide any additional details or how the former couple will split their assets.

The divorce was first reported by celebrity website RadarOnline.com.

Plaskett's health had been declining over the past year after he was diagnosed with dementia, his partner Mario Ducet told CBC News.

Born in 1918 in New Westminster, Plaskett studied art in Banff, San Francisco, New York, and London before settling in Paris in 1951.

In a 2008 interview with CBC News, Plaskett described the inspiration he found in the romantic French city.

"When I went to Paris I was so enchanted with the beauty of the old world — what was left of it after the wars — that I just had to surrender myself to my rapture at seeing what was in front of my eyes."

Most recently, Plaskett called England home.

Plaskett's chosen subjects have always been intimate expressions of everyday life. His works hang in public art collections across the country including the National Gallery of Canada.

Most recently, the artist helped found The Plaskett Foundation in 2004 to aid and support Canadian visual artists.

Each year, the foundation awards $25,000 to a young Canadian student to enable them to travel and study art in Europe for one year.

In a statement on the foundation's website Plaskett described the joy he received from giving away "a large part" of his fortune to help others:

"The art that I make and that I see others make confirms the miracle of being alive. Almost every day I live in a state of exaltation."

Legally blind Stevie Wonder fan seeks accessible seat for Toronto show

A legally blind Toronto resident has been trying for days to get a seat for an upcoming Stevie Wonder show that will allow her to see her favourite singer.

But so far, Tracy Whitfield has found that her requests for a seat that will accommodate her needs at the November concert have gone unheeded.

Whitfield has been legally blind for nearly all of her adult life, after suddenly losing much of her sight when she was 19 years old.

That change was very hard for Whitfield to cope with, a difficult time she recalls as a depressing period in which she even had thoughts of suicide.

"I would say one of the things that got me through was actually listening to Stevie Wonder," said Whitfield, who is now 40. "He was this sort of, noteworthy, inspirational blind musician. So for me as a woman without sight at the age…he was inspiring."

She's had the fortune to attend shows by Wonder twice in the past — once in Montreal and once in Toronto. But Whitfield has never been able to get the kind of accessible seating that will allow her to actually see the singer perform.

Thus for her to fully enjoy the upcoming Wonder show, Whitfield said she'll need to be sitting in the front row, so that she'll be able to watch him on stage.

"I can't read small font, for instance, so I use a large monitor at work, I read electronic books and  have to use really large fonts and formats to read those things," Whitfield told CBC News in an interview. "Seeing people is also challenging, so if I'm too far away from anything, I can't see it."

Whitfield began calling Ticketmaster last Tuesday about securing an accessible seat to meet her needs at the November show. She was initially told that the venue has only accessibility seats for mobility.

"The irony of this … is that this is a Stevie Wonder concert, so this is an individual who is blind and there is no policy at this concert to provide accessibility for individuals with sight impairments," she said.

Seats in the sixth row were available, but she says that wouldn't be any use for her.

"Front row seats for me aren't a luxury like they may be for some people, they're a necessity," she said.

"That's how we ensure I can actually see something and I'm not prepared to pay $150 a ticket for seats in the sixth row, which for me is the equivalent of sitting in like, the 50th row."

Whitfield declined those seats, but continued to contact the people involved with the concert.

On Monday, she was offered seats in the 21st row.

Ticketmaster's website indicates that the company sells tickets "on behalf of promoters, teams, artists and venues," but it doesn't determine the availability of those seats, nor their accessibility.

After CBC News inquired about Whitfield's situation, a Ticketmaster representative emailed Whitfield on Monday afternoon to apologize and to stress that the handling of her inquiry was "not typical" for the company.

"We've sent a request for clarification to the promoter for Stevie Wonder," the email said.

The venue in this case is Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment's Air Canada Centre, which told CBC it does accommodate the visually impaired.

"With each event, our fan services team works to ensure a great experience for every fan that comes into our building. When fans contact us with an accessibility inquiry, we work with our event partners, in this case Live Nation, to address each need," said Dave Haggith, a spokesperson for Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.

Live Nation, the concert promoter, has told CBC News that there are a limited number of front-row seats, but the company is "still working" on the situation with the venue.

Polaris Music Prize 2014: Tanya Tagaq wins $30K as jury's pick

Nunavut-reared throat singer Tanya Tagaq claimed the $30,000 Polaris Music Prize on Monday, just moments after mesmerizing the gala crowd with a show-stealing performance aided by a choir.

Tagaq's record Animism beat out higher-profile offerings from the likes of Drake and past winners Arcade Fire and Owen Pallett to claim the award, given to the best Canadian album of the past year as determined by a group of journalists.

Tagaq performed in front of a screen that rolled a long list of names of murdered and missing Aboriginal women.

As Tagaq took the stage, host Jay Baruchel fell to his knees and fanned his arms toward her in admiration.

"The album itself came from a very awesome place," Tagaq said as she accepted. "I couldn't be more happy."

"People should wear and eat seal as much as possible," said Tanya Tagaq during her acceptance speech. (Canadian Press)

After thanking her producer and family, Tagaq shifted into an impassioned "side note."

"People should wear and eat seal as much as possible because if you can imagine an indigenous culture thriving and surviving on sustainable resource, wearing seal and eating it, it's delicious and there's lots of them.

"I really believe that if hipsters can make flower beards in, then you can do it with seal," she added. "Come on guys."

Generally, this was a loose show, with a cheerfully profane Baruchel keeping things casual.

In performances, Edmonton-raised psych-pop eccentric Mac DeMarco performed in camouflage overalls and a "Simpsons" T-shirt, playing mock crooner during Still Together, while Vancouver-based rapper Shad meshed nicely with guest vocalist Lights.

Most of the evening's nominees performed, including Pallett — the award's inaugural winner back in 2006 — and Toronto multi-instrumentalist Basia Bulat.

Neither Arcade Fire, who won in 2011, nor Montreal experimental collective Yamantaka // Sonic Titan took to the stage.

And Drake — shortlisted for his smash Nothing was the Same — was simultaneously booked to play the Hollywood Bowl with Lil Wayne.

Since Drake and Shad's Polaris shutout continued Monday — and they've now combined for five nominations — the award has still never gone to a hip-hop artist, with other past winners including Karkwa, Patrick Watson and Feist.

Tagaq was one of only three first-time nominees for the Polaris this year (along with DeMarco and Hamilton electronic R&B songwriter/producer Jessy Lanza), but she's a decade-plus veteran of the industry with two Juno nominations behind her.

"We've been doing this a long time, like 10 years," she told the crowd.

"So if you liked it, you should just really come to the show."

She hung around onstage a little longer, admitting she didn't know how to wrap up her seemingly improvised speech.

"I'm going to get off the stage because I'm feeling weird," she finally announced.

"I'm only comfortable when I'm grunting."

Actor and playwright Linda Griffiths, best known for her iconic performance in the 1980 one-woman play Maggie and Pierre, has died after a battle with breast cancer, a family friend said.

She died shortly after 5 a.m. ET Sunday at Toronto's Bridgeport Health centre, said longtime friend and actor Nicky Guadagni.

Public records say Griffiths was born in Montreal on Oct. 7, 1956, but her caretaker Layne Coleman told CBC she was was born on Oct. 7, 1953.

Griffiths co-wrote Maggie and Pierre with Paul Thompson and the play went on to tour Canada and earn headlines. She played both Pierre and Margaret Trudeau in scenes taking place from 1974 to 1980.

While preparing for the production, she enlisted the help of reporters to get into a Governor General's ball and managed to dance with Trudeau, who was between terms as prime minister after losing the spring of 1979 election.

"We seemed to dance for a very long time," she later wrote about the encounter, which allowed her to get an up-close impression of the man.

"He gave me his secretary's number, and I think he did this with ladies that he liked," she told an interviewer.

She later said in an interview for Theatre Museum Canada that she tried to play the role of Pierre respectfully, even at a time when he was reviled in parts of Western Canada.

Griffiths won five Dora Mavor Moore awards, including wins for Maggie and Pierre (1980) for both acting and writing, O.D. in Paradise (1983), Jessica (1986) and Alien Creature (2000).

She was also the recipient of a Gemini award, two Chalmers awards for Jessica and Alien Creature, and a Quizanne International Festival award for Jessica.

A film starring Leonardo DiCaprio is holding an open casting call for First Nations women in Yellowknife on Saturday.

The film The Revenant is set to start shooting in Alberta and British Columbia, with an expected release in late 2015.

The movie takes place in the 1800s and follows the vengeful life of Hugh Glass, played by DiCaprio.

Representatives from the film will be at the Yellowknife Inn from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday looking for a First Nations woman in her 20s or early 30s to play Powaqa, an Arikara warrior.

Emma Day, who is with the casting department for the movie, says women interested in the role don't have to have any acting experience, nor do they need to prepare anything for the casting call.

"There's no need to do makeup or costume — nothing like that," she said. "We just want who you are as a human being.

"She is with a lot of the lead characters in the film. And like I said, she's a warrior, so she's in all the warrior scenes that happen in the movie, and her part is integral to the story. It's a very important role."

Day said the casting call simply involves taking some pictures and being interviewed.

Callbacks are expected to take place on Sunday.

More nude celebrity photos likely connected to iCloud hack leak online

Leak appears connected to dozens of photos uploaded in early September

CBC News Posted: Sep 20, 2014 11:59 PM ET Last Updated: Sep 20, 2014 11:59 PM ET

More nude photographs of celebrities were leaked online Saturday in what appears to be the second release of material from a hacker who posted intimate images of dozens of celebrities on an internet forum earlier this month.

Among the victims of the most recent leak were reality television star Kim Kardashian, actor Vanessa Hudgens and U.S. national women's soccer team goalie Hope Solo. Previously unreleased photos of celebrities included in the last leak, such as Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence and The Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco, were posted as well.

According to multiple media outlets, the images first appeared Saturday morning on the site 4Chan, and were also posted by users on Reddit, but were quickly deleted by site administrators.

The latest victims were all included in a 'master list' of 101 people, posted to 4Chan during the initial leak several weeks ago, of which the anonymous hacker claims to have personal photos and videos.

The FBI is currently investigating the first incident, and a representative for Lawrence said in early September that anyone caught posting photographs of The Hunger Games franchise actor would be aggressively pursued for prosecution by her legal counsel.

It was revealed shortly after the first round of images were posted online that many of them came from the celebrities' personal iCloud accounts.

A 'funnier, edgier and more subtle' family dramedy says CBC arts reporter Zulekha Nathoo

CBC News Posted: Sep 19, 2014 12:19 PM ET Last Updated: Sep 19, 2014 12:19 PM ET

Review: Tina Fey and Jason Bateman shine as siblings returning home after their father's death in This Is Where I Leave You

The pair, along with their mother and two brothers, are forced to confront the reasons for their ongoing unhappiness after getting stuck under the same roof for a week.

The all-star cast, which includes Jane Fonda, Adam Driver, Rose Byrne, and Abigail Spencer, keeps the film lighthearted while reinforcing the power of the family bond.

The chemistry and quick wit between siblings make the film an easy watch.

This Is Where I Leave You is a funnier, edgier and more subtle family dramedy than last year's melodramatic August: Osage County.  4 stars out of 5  Zulekha NathooCBC Arts reporter

This Is Where I Leave You is in theatres Friday.

A Tribe Called Red cancels performance at human rights museum

A Tribe Called Red has pulled out of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights' opening festivities this weekend, citing concerns about how the museum portrays aboriginal issues.

The museum announced late Thursday that the group, which was supposed to perform at a concert Saturday evening, "has elected not to participate over concern around the way Indigenous issues are presented in the Museum."

"We know that building dialogue and earning trust is a long-term process, and we hope this will again be an opportunity for respectful conversation on issues that historically haven't been easy to talk about," officials said in a statement.

A Tribe Called Red was slated to perform on Saturday evening as part of RightsFest, a weekend of music, dance, art and more that will follow the museum's opening ceremonies on Friday.

On Friday, the group released the following statement:

Human rights are great for society. We appreciate the work the museum has been doing to bring attention to global issues. Unfortunately, we feel it was necessary to cancel our performance because of the museum's misrepresentation and downplay of the genocide that was experienced by Indigenous people in Canada by refusing to name it genocide. Until this is rectified, we'll support the museum from a distance.

J.C Campbell, another aboriginal country and blues singer scheduled to play on the weekend, said he will continue as planned but he supports A Tribe Called Red's decision.

He said it's important for big acts like that to make big statements but it's also important to have an aboriginal presence at the museum's opening weekend. Campbell wants to go and sing songs relevant to aboriginal issues, like one called Residential School Pain.

Similarly, Don Amero, a Metis singer-songwriter, will take to the stage as planned. He said he understands the reasons behind A Tribe Called Red's decision but he hasn't been inside the museum yet and wants to see it first before passing judgment.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights deeply regrets that A Tribe Called Red will no longer take part in the Museum's opening weekend programming.

"The CMHR understands the group has elected not to participate over concern around the way Indigenous issues are presented in the Museum," the CMHR said in a statement. "We know that building dialogue and earning trust is a long-term process, and we hope this will again be an opportunity for respectful conversation on issues that historically haven't been easy to talk about."

The Museum has extended an invitation to A Tribe Called Red to tour the CMHR at their convenience to experience for themselves the full breadth of exhibit content dedicated to Indigenous perspectives and issues.

Museum officials noted that input and community engagement with Indigenous Peoples across Canada is ongoing, with the goal to become a broadly representative and accessible public resource on Indigenous issues. Indigenous perspectives, struggles and themes are included on every level of the building and reflected in the Museum's architecture.

Cultivating trust and understanding is an essential part of the CMHR's mandate, the Museum said, which will be achieved through continued discussion and dialogue.

When will you take in the newly opened Canadian Museum for Human Rights?
