Charlottetown has relaunched its Canada Day weekend festival once again, announcing the Big Red Music Festival .
Festival organizers announced Wednesday that Canada Day weekend concerts on the waterfront would feature Metric, Our Lady Peace, David Myles, Great Big Sea, Serena Ryder and Hedley, among others.
The city has been struggling with its Canada Day festivities for years. For many years the event was called the Festival of Lights, and featured a very popular concert series. While there were no problems on the concert grounds themselves, downtown residents made increasingly loud complaints about rowdy drunks roaming the streets before and after shows.
In 2010 the city relaunched the weekend as Charlottetown Summerfest. Billed as a more family-friendly event, the weekend failed to draw tourists in the numbers hoped for to launch the high tourism season.
Sponsors for the Big Red Music Festival include the PEI 2014 committee, the City of Charlottetown, Confederation Bridge and the P.E.I. government.
The Big Red Music Festival will run from June 28 to July 1.
