The Dance Open International ballet festival in St. Petersburg features the world's top ballet talent dancing in Russia, a country with a venerable ballet pedigree.

This year two Canadians have been handpicked to join the dance festival — Jason Reilly of Stuttgart Ballet and Matthew Golding of Dutch National Ballet.

Reilly was born in Toronto and trained at the National Ballet School before joining Stuttgart Ballet in 1997. He's now a principal dancer and was asked to dance the lead in Eugene Onegin.

Onegin, inspired by Pushkin's quintessential Russian masterpiece, is one of ballet's plum roles and Reilly is experienced with John Cranko's choreography for the classic story ballet.

"I think it's a huge deal because it's such a prestigious event," Reilly said of Dance Open, adding that he is honoured to be asked.

Matthew Golding, a Saskatchewan native who trained at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, performed for a month in St. Petersberg at Dance Open last year.

A principal dancer at the Dutch National Ballet, he's happy to be back in Russia.

"It's a career that has many moments of ups and downs and it's a career that goes quick. So if you can enjoy it, the small moments, then the big ones just come and it tastes that much sweeter," he said.

As CBC correspondent Jean-François Bélanger reported from St. Petersberg, for both dancers it's a chance to make a name for themselves among ballet's elite.
