Director Yann Demange wants the audience to really feel something when they watch his feature film debut '71.
Set in bloody Belfast during The Troubles —the conflict between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Island—the film stars Unbroken actor Jack O'Connell as Private Gary Hook, a young wounded soldier who struggles to get back to his unit.
The thriller premiered to strong buzz at the Berlin Film Festival in 2014 and went on to complete the festival circuit, including a stop at TIFF, picking up accolades along the way for Demange and O'Connell.

Though set in a politically charged time, Demange wasn't looking to tell the definitive story of The Troubles. Instead, as he told CBC News, he wanted to bring the audience into the experience of living through civil war.
' I wanted the audience to experience the film with the protagonist...who literally feels like he is getting smashed across the face.'- Yann Demange, Director, '71
"I wanted the audience to experience the film with the protagonist who doesn't really know what's going on, who is in a state of shock, who literally feels like he is getting smashed across the face."
Although the story is fiction, both O'Connell and Demange felt it was essential that there was a truth to everything that happened in the story.
"Gary and the lads that are chasing him, to kill him, would probably get on and have a few beers," O'Connell told CBC in an interview back in September. "[And] that was the heartbreak of it ... that was the point of our film, to get there on ground level, show the costs, and throw out the questions."
Since the film began its festival tour, both Demange and O'Connell have signed on to a number of high profile projects.
Demange is reported to be in negotiations to direct a feature film version of the documentary The Seven Five, about corrupt police officers in 1980s New York, produced by Megan Ellison and Birdman's John Lesher. And he has signed on to an unnamed project for Brad Pitt's Plan B and New Regency about the LA riots.

O'Connell won the EE Rising Star Award at the 2015 BAFTAs, which is voted on by fans, and he received favourable reviews for his role in Unbroken. He is currently shooting Money Monster, directed by Jodie Foster, starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts.
'71 opens in Toronto and Vancouver on March 13, with plans for wider release across the country in the coming weeks.
