A Paul Gaugain painting of two Tahitian women has been privately sold for a reported $300 million, according to Swiss media reports.
The seller, a former Sotheby's auction house executive living in Basel, Switzerland, has confirmed the sale.
But Ruedi Staehelin, 62, won't disclose the price or the buyer.
In an interview with Swiss paper Basler Zeitung published Saturday, Staehelin would only say, "It's clear, that it isn't just a figure in the double-digit millions."
The 1892 oil painting by the French post-impressionist is called "Nafea faa ipoipo?" — Tahitian for "When will you marry?"
If reports about the price are true, this would be the world's most expensive single work of art.
It is believed the piece is going to a museum in Qatar. Swiss media reported earlier this week that the painting was bought by Qatari royalty.
