Ron Howard, Hugh Jackman and Lorde are among some of the celebrities coming forward Wednesday to pay tribute to Hollywood legend Lauren Bacall, who died Tuesday at age 89 in New York.

The silver screen icon, known for her smoky voice, sharp wit and marriage to fellow Hollywood powerhouse Humphrey Bogart, was pronounced dead at 5:21 p.m. Tuesday. Reports from her family said the Academy Award nominated actress suffered a massive stroke.

Rush director Ron Howard reflected on his grief and his work with Bacall in a Twitter message Wednesday morning, writing: "A sad week - RIP Lauren Bacall. I played her son in The Shootist Wonderful and talented lady."

Lorde — the 17-year-old singer behind the pop hit Royals — was a newborn baby when Bacall received her long awaited Oscar nomination in 1996. The teenage pop star was moved to express her admiration for the outspoken actress with the short missive: "Lauren Bacall was pure spunk."

Academy Award-winning actress Marlee Matlin, who counted Bacall as a friend, witnessed the star's spunk firsthand. In a message posted Tuesday night on Twitter, Matlin described the sage dating advice she received from the outspoken star: "When I told my pal #LaurenBacall I had boyfriend troubles she said "Men, f**k 'em! Give 'em hell in heaven Betty RIP"

Bacall's close friends typically called her by her given name, Betty.

Bacall's own love life was a made-in-Hollywood drama. She met her future first husband Humphrey Bogart on the set of To Have and Have Not in 1944. It was a breakout role for the 19-year-old actress, who cemented her fame as a sultry screen star with one little phrase, which Fifty Shades of Grey author EL James echoed Tuesday in Bacall's honour: "'You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow.' RIP Lauren Bacall"

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
