Melissa McCarthy hits the road with her heavy-drinking granny (played by Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon) in the new movie Tammy.
The oddball comedy is a screenwriting first for McCarthy, who co-wrote it with her husband, Ben Falcone, who is the film's director.
But there's not much new as far as McCarthy's character development.
Like many of her recent roles (The Heat, Bridesmaids) the laughs rely heavily on her own humiliation.
As far as CBC film reviewer Eli Glasner is concerned, Tammy may be a sign that it's time for the comedian to evolve.
