In the world of ballet, there's an age-old belief that a female dancer can commit to her art or having children, but not both. However, dancers at the National Ballet of Canada are challenging the notion.
At the Toronto-based company, 10 out of 35 female dancers are moms — unlike other top companies around the globe where barely a handful of ballerinas have children.
"I kind of felt that I had given life — I can carry this being, I had created a human being ... really everything else seems so easy in comparison," principal dancer Sonia Rodriguez told CBC News.
"I felt like I could tackle anything."
In the attached video, Deana Sumanac explores the lives of dancing moms at the National Ballet of Canada.
