Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Donna Tartt and Jhumpa Lahiri are in the running for the Bailey Women's Prize for Fiction.

Launched in 1996, the annual £30,000 (nearly $55,000 Cdn) prize celebrates an English-language fiction title written by a woman. It was formerly known as the Orange Prize.

The six finalists are "brilliant, original and gripping," declared jury chair Helen Fraser.

Nigerian writer Adichie is a contender for her much lauded novel Americanah, which won the fiction category of the 2013 U.S. National Book Critics Circle Awards.

American author Tartt is a nominee for The Goldfinch, her long-awaited third novel and a bestseller of 2013.

Meanwhile, Indo-American and British novelist Lahiri, a Pulitzer Prize-winner, was shortlisted for her latest, The Lowland.

Rounding out the list are Australia's Hannah Kent for Burial Rites and Irish writer Audrey Magee for The Undertaking.

Earlier, two Canadians had been longlisted for contention: Margaret Atwood for MaddAddam and Claire Cameron for The Bear.

The 2014 winner of the Bailey Prize will be unveiled at an awards ceremony in London on June 4.
