Madonna revisits challenging moments in her life in a new guest column for Harper's Bazaar, including recounting how she was raped as a young woman during her early days living in New York.

In the column, which addresses some difficult moments over the course of her life, including challenges, taking risks, survival and being "daring," the iconic pop singer briefly recounts a sexual assault that took place less than a year after she moved to New York from Michigan.

"New York wasn't everything I thought it would be," the 55-year-old performer says in a piece posted online Friday.

"It did not welcome me with open arms. The first year, I was held up at gunpoint. Raped on the roof of a building I was dragged up to with a knife in my back, and had my apartment broken into three times."

Madonna had previously revealed the sexual assault in the 1990s while promoting her controversial book Sex. The incident was also recounted in the 2007 biography, Madonna: Like an Icon, penned by British writer Lucy O'Brien.

Searching for spirituality, moving to England, adopting children from Africa and motherhood are other life challenges Madonna addressed in the column.
