Stephen Dunn, a St. John's filmmaker who cast acting legend Gordon Pinsent in a film about both growing up and growing old, has won CBC's Short Film Face Off.

Dunn's 13-minute film, Life Doesn't Frighten Me, was declared the winner of the national competition during the series finale broadcast on CBC -TV on Saturday night.

The film, which was shot in Toronto, stars Jade Aspros as an awkward 13-year-old girl who tries to navigate her way through adolescence, with some advice from her grandfather, played by Pinsent.

Dunn was one of nine finalists in the Short Film Face Off, all of which were screened over the last month on the national TV series.

Life Doesn't Frighten Me has already drawn strong acclaim. Last year, it won the best live action film at the Toronto International Film Festival's Student Shwowcase, as well as a prize at the Munich Film Festival.

Dunn wins a cash prize of $30,000 toward his next film, from Telefilm Canada. As well, he will receive a $10,000 equipment rental package from sponsor PS Production Services.

Dunn said he intends to use the money toward a feature film he is currently developing.
