Justin Bieber had some respite from a long string of negative press of late with news that his infectious early hit Baby is now officially the biggest digital single in U.S. history.
The Recording Industry Association of America has certified that the 2010 track by the Canadian pop phenomenon has reached Diamond status: a song surpassing 10 million U.S. sales
In May, the RIAA revised its formula for counting sales to include on-demand audio and internet streams. The move helped boost artists with major online presence, including Bieber.
Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, presented the RIAA Diamond status trophy to him during a concert in Newark, N.J. on Wednesday night. Braun pointed out that the high-energy track has actually exceeded the 12 million U.S. sales mark, and counting.
"I met Justin when he was 12, and through all the good times and all the hard times, he has stayed positive and worked hard for all of you," Braun told screaming concertgoers.
Bieber proceeded to thank his fans, both those at the concert and around the world, as well as his mother and Braun.
The 19-year-old singer, currently on the North American leg of a world tour, is poised to travel to South America and Australia in the fall. He's made headlines throughout the tour for questionable behaviour and, at Wednesday's show in Newark, for a lacklustre performance.
