Coraline author Neil Gaiman's last book-signing tour

Bestselling English author Neil Gaiman has always tried to connect with fans, but he's revealed that his current jaunt across Canada, Europe and the U.S. will mark his last book-signing tour.

"There comes a point when you say: "You know, I don't really know why I'm doing this, other than that moment of connection — that moment where somebody gets to say 'thank you' and I get to say 'you're welcome' and I look in their eyes... That is magic. And that continues to be magic 1,200 times, 1,700 times, 2,000 times a night. But they're long nights," he told CBC News Tuesday night before a packed Toronto reading and fan Q&A for his latest novel, The Ocean at the End of the Lane.

With an oeuvre that includes titles from The Sandman to American Gods to Coraline, Gaiman has developed a significant fanbase over the years, including nearly 2 million Twitter followers. With book-signing tours, he and his fans have increasingly been left exhausted by ever-lengthening queues, he said.

"If I'm going to do touring stuff, better that I should take theatres and do 'An Evening with Neil Gaiman.' I'll pre-sign a few thousand books... I'll read stories, I'll do poems, I'll answer questions, I'll have a wonderful time, but I'm not going to try and then do 7,000 signings afterwards."

In the attached video, English author Gaiman talks to CBC's Eli Glasner about connecting with fans, what fascinates him about childhood and how he uses Twitter.
