It's been more than three decades since OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark) first hit it big, but the reunited British synth-pop band is enjoying a resurgence for its 35th anniversary.
The original foursome — comprising Andy McCluskey, Paul Humphreys, Malcolm Holmes and Martin Cooper — are in the midst of a North American tour and recently released their 12th album, English Electric.
"We only ever made one plan, which was to do one concert," Humphreys told CBC, recounting the story of the band's reunion for a German TV show in 2006.
"It's a 35-year rolling accident. That's our career," McCluskey quipped.
That Germany appearance led to the band members officially reuniting. Soon enough, they also began writing new material.
"That is a dangerous thing — to have a new album when you've not made any music together for a number of years and you know that the new songs that you're writing are going to be compared to what people considered to be your classics," Humphreys said.
"But [2010's] History of Modern album was critically acclaimed and the fans loved it, so we relaxed ... we could still be a current OMD rather then a sort of retro-looking OMD."
McCluskey and Humphreys talked to the CBC's Alice Hopton about the incredible reception to their hit If You Leave at the Coachella Music Festival, writing new songs and the upside to touring today versus in the 80s.
After concerts in Philadelphia, Washington, Boston and New York, OMD returns to Toronto again on July 19 before continuing on with more U.S. dates.
