FILM REVIEW: I'm So Excited

Believe me I WAS excited. The mere mention of director Pedro Almodovar's name and my eyes light up as brightly as his signature sets. Because let's face it, with films like Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down and All About My Mother under his belt, this is a man who has placed the bar sky high. This time, I mean it literally, since almost the whole film takes place up in the air, on a passenger plane.

My hopes sank a little when I realized that Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas were in the movie for only a flicker of time. The director and Cruz adore each other, and have worked together on at least four previous films. So my heart was looking to once again feel the magic that danced throughout Volver. Maybe next flight.

Carlos Areces as Fajas, Raúl Arévalo as Ulloa and Javier Cámara as Joserra, the stereotyped gay flight attendants. (Sony Pictures Classics/Mongrel Media)

This particular voyage takes off without the starlet, and we focus instead on a group of strangers who are stuck on a plane with no proper way to land. The title refers to a Pointers Sister's song that is sung by a trio of stereotyped gay flight attendants in an effort to keep the cabin distracted. They also serve up drinks and drugs and it all leads to romping that is curiously non-arousing.

In his other films, Almodovar's lightness is the rewarding punctuation to his darkness. So when he aims for pure silly camp in I'm So Excited, there's a disappointment in the total lack of character depth and genuine emotion.

Like the proverbial one-night stand, there are a few moments of pleasure, but just know it won't be memorable the next day.

Let me point you toward the Exit sign.
