Out of the ashes of a financial apocalypse rises Detroit's burgeoning arts scene.

On Thursday the financial difficulties of the city came to a head as officials filed for bankruptcy protection.

The slow burn of a failing economy slowly gutted some of the most affluent neighbourhoods leaving behind abandoned wastelands. Residents made a mass exodus to the suburbs leaving the downtown a shell of the American powerhouse it once was.

Now that the city is laid bare, artists have come from around the country to roost and flourish in cheap city living. Traditionally, artist communities thrive in impoverished areas turning their surroundings into funky ghettos.

Detroit's abandoned buildings are the perfect canvas for some spectacular street art such as Kobie Solomon's Chimera Project painted on the Russell Industrial Centre.

Though graffiti is seen to some an urban scourge, most see it as a chance to display hidden talents in a public domain. Most graffiti goes unscrubbed in Detroit allowing artists to continue to use the derelict palettes unfettered by the law.

Many artists and residents are hoping that the artist community will breathe new life back into Detroit. There is hope that the idiom "artists make real estate" will be true of this community.

There are a lot of parallels being drawn between Detroit and the financial and structural state of New York City in 1975 when the city came a hair away from declaring bankruptcy.

As the city is so strapped for cash, officials have called in art appraisers from Christie's to asses the worth of the valuable pieces of art that live in the Detroit Institute of Art.

Officials are contemplating selling off the works of art to keep the city afloat.

The emergency appraisal shocked and outraged the city's artist community who refuse to say goodbye to famous works of art donated to the museum. The conundrum has put city officials in uncharted waters.
