Actor uses Fringe play to raise awareness of Aspergers

I've been a lot more confident since doing stand-up comedy.

—Adam Schwartz, performer

"When I was 12 my mom told me I was autistic. At the time I thought that meant I was predisposed to being an artist. So I tried my hand at finger painting. That didn't work."

That's a line from Adam Schwartz's Fringe show Aspergers; a Tale of a Social Misfit. In it, he tells stories about the difficulties of fitting in in high school, making friends and winning over the ladies.

Schwartz's own symptoms include poor social skills and difficulty reading body language and social cues. He also has poor hand-eye coordination.

The 27-year-old hopes to raise awareness of Aspergers through his one-man comedy show.

He admits it's very unusual for someone who is uncomfortable in social situations to do standup comedy, but one of his other symptoms is a lack of inhibition.

"I guess most people would have something holding them back by telling them 'look out, you're going to embarrass yourself by doing this,' but I've always had trouble with that part of my brain, so I've always jumped before looking," he says.

Schwartz first tried his hand at standup five years ago. Disappointed that he did poorly in a voice and diction class, he wanted to make up for it, so he went to Rumor's Comedy Club on open mic night, got up on stage and told jokes about attending a Girlicious concert.

And people laughed.

He says comedy has been a great help to him in dealing with his symptoms. "I've been a lot more confident since doing stand-up comedy. In terms of my social interactions, I feel much more comfortable around people."

As a stand-up comic he performs regularly around town at Rumor's, Tavern United, Rose n' Bee, King's Head Pub and The Cheer.

He says he really loves being on stage. As for getting the girl, well, he's still trying.

Adam Schwartz performs Aspergers; a Tale of a Social Misfit at Venue 3, the Playhouse Studio during the Fringe.
