For the second season in a row, Prairie Theatre Exchange will offer up an all-Canadian lineup in 2013-2014.
The five-show roster includes the world premiere of a new play by Winnipegger Trish Cooper, the return of PTE fave Daniel MacIvor, and a show highlighting the music of Leonard Cohen.
Oh, and a show about marijuana.
Here's what's coming up at PTE:
The Best Brothers by Daniel MacIvor (Oct. 16 - Nov. 3):
Canadian playwright Daniel MacIvor is a rarity - a critical and audience favourite. PTE seems to like him as well - this play, about two diametrically-opposed brothers trying to find common ground as they plan their mother's funeral, will mark the fourth time a MacIvor play has appeared at PTE since 2006 (the last was PTE's 2011 hit, Bingo!).
Social Studies by Trish Cooper (Nov. 20 - Dec. 8):
Local writer (and member of PTE's Playwrights Unit) Trish Cooper will see the world premiere of her new comedy next season. It centres on a woman who moves back into her childhood home, only to discover her mother has taken in a Sudanese refugee.
Chelsea Hotel - The Songs of Leonard Cohen by Tracey Power (Jan. 22 - Feb. 9, 2014): Conceived and directed by Vancouver's Tracey Power (who was also behind another PTE "play with music," 2011's Back To You: The Life and Music of Lucille Starr), this show uses Cohen's music as its inspiration.
It tells the story of a writer haunted by his characters as he works in the Chelsea Hotel - but more importantly, it'll feature Cohen hits like "Suzanne" and "Hallelujah."
The Valley by Joan MacLeod (Feb. 26 - Mar. 16):
A new play by one of Canada's most acclaimed playwrights (like Daniel MacIvor, she's earned both a Governor General's Award, and the prestigious Siminovitch Prize). This drama focuses on the fallout of an altercation between a police office and a troubled teenager.
Harvest by Ken Cameron (Apr. 2 - Apr. 20):
Based on a real-life incident involving his parents, Ken Cameron's comedy focuses on an elderly couple who rent out their farmhouse, only to find it turned into a marijuana grow op.
