After the staggering success of Fifty Shades of Grey comes the Canadian-penned novel titled S.E.C.R.E.T., the next buzzworthy title in the new wave of erotic fiction.
Penned under the pseudonym L. Marie Adeline, the Canadian novel was one of the most talked-about projects at the 2012 Frankfurt Book Fair last fall, with publishing rights snapped up by more than 30 countries before the book had even been finished.
The Canadian-penned erotic title S.E.C.R.E.T. was one of the most buzzed-about titles at the 2012 Frankfurt Book Fair in October. (Random House) L. Marie Adeline revealed her true identity — Canadian writer Lisa Gabriele — to Anna Maria Tremonti on CBC Radio's The Current on Tuesday.
"Last year, all anyone was talking about was Fifty Shades of Grey and how well it did and how many countries published it. I was working as a ghost writer on a business book and I realized that I wanted to actually make a living as a writer," said Gabriele, an established TV producer and writer who's worked on CBC-TV's Dragon's Den, The Current, Nerve and Vice.
Though she already had two novels and three non-fiction books under her belt, S.E.C.R.E.T. was Gabriele's first foray into erotica. The story follows a young widow who joins a secret society that helps women realise their sexual fantasies.
"I'm a working writer now because I actually decided to take a stab at a genre that was very popular and sort of take what I normally do, give it an erotic spin and see what could happen."
Gabriele talked to The Current about shifting her writing, crafting sexually explicit material and the recent booming business of erotica.
