Gerry Barrett, a Winnipeg comedian and aboriginal Elvis impersonator, is getting ready to perform at an official inaugural ball for U.S. President Barack Obama.
Barrett is heading to Washington, D.C., to perform at the Native Nations Inaugural Ball on Jan. 21 at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian.
The comedian will do a stand-up routine, then come back later in the evening as his on-stage persona, "Ojibway Elvis."
Barrett told CBC News on Thursday that he's trying to keep his nerves in check by treating it as just another corporate event, but his wife thinks differently.
"She said, 'Yeah, but you know what? This is isn't a normal corporate gig,'" he said with a laugh.
"Brad Pitt might be in the audience, you might have a George Lucas. You've got all the chiefs from North America there. So, yeah, the pressure's on, of course."
Tickets for the Smithsonian ball start at $1,000 US each. The event will include musical performances, dancing and indigenous cuisine.
Barrett, who also co-hosts the Big Bear Breakfast Show on Winnipeg aboriginal radio station NCI-FM, said organizers of the Washington event found a YouTube video of him in a CBC segment from the Winnipeg Comedy Festival.
"They enjoyed the political humour that I was doing and thought that that would be perfect for the event," he said.
