Paul Thomas Anderson's intense drama The Master earned kudos from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association on the weekend, but it was the French end-of-life tale Amour that snapped up the group's top prize.
The LAFCA named Michael Haneke's Amour the year's best picture on Sunday. The winner of the top honour at Cannes this year and Austria's official entry for Oscar consideration, Amour explores an elderly married couple's relationship as the husband (Jean-Louis Trintignant) cares for his ailing wife (Emmanuelle Riva).
Riva was also singled out for the group's best-actress title, sharing the win with Jennifer Lawrence, who was named for her turn as a troubled young widow in the mental illness comedy-drama Silver Linings Playbook.
In the acclaimed French film Amour, Jean-Louis Trintignant portrays a man caring for his ailing wife, played by Emmanuelle Riva. (Sony Pictures Classics/Associated Press)Anderson's The Master — which gained buzz because it was purported to be an insider portrait of the origins of Scientology — dominated the L.A. list. Anderson was named best director and the group bestowed its best-actor title on Joaquin Phoenix for his volatile, almost animalistic performance as a war veteran who falls under the spell of a charismatic religious leader (Philip Seymour Hoffman).
Though better known for sunny roles, Amy Adams showed off a tough, grittier side as Hoffman's wife in The Master, which earned her the LAFCA's supporting actress honour. Widely praised for a host of beautiful, sweeping scenes, the film was also a winner for the production design of David Crank and Jack Fisk.
The critics group's remaining picks included:
- Best supporting actor: Dwight Henry, Beasts of the Southern Wild.
- Screenplay: Chris Terrio, Argo.
- Cinematography: Roger Deakins, Skyfall.
- Editing: Dylan Tichenor and William Goldenberg, Zero Dark Thirty.
- Score: Dan Romer and Benh Zeitlin, Beasts of the Southern Wild.
- Foreign-language film: Holy Motors (Leos Carax, director).
- Documentary/non-fiction film: The Gatekeepers (Dror Moreh, director).
- Animation: Frankenweenie (Tim Burton, director).
- New Generation Award: Benh Zeitlin, Beasts of the Southern Wild.
- Career achievement: Frederick Wiseman.
- Experimental/independent film/video: Leviathan.
The choices of the Los Angeles critics marked a departure from recent lists from other cities and widens the field for the films vying for honours during the current awards season. Both the New York Film Critics Circle and the U.S. National Board of Review recently chose Kathryn Bigelow's docudrama Zero Dark Thirty, based on the hunt for and raid on Osama bin Laden, as the year's best film.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association will reveal its Golden Globe nominations on Thursday, while the Academy for Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will unveil the upcoming Oscar contenders on Jan. 10.
