Mission, B.C.'s Carly Rae Jepsen became a breakout star this year, with her catchy tune Call Me Maybe declared song of the summer by Billboard.
But Jepsen, 26, took several years to become an overnight sensation.
In 2007, she tried her hand at Canadian Idol, coming in third. She'd been writing her own songs for a couple of years and released a folk-tinged debut album Tug of War in 2008.
She took the Juno for best new artist in 2010, but it wasn't until another pop sensation —Justin Bieber — gave a shoutout to her talent on Twitter that she moved into the spotlight.
Call Me Maybe was the first single on her second album Curiosity and it became an international hit, with nearly 300 million people watching the video online.
Now she's planning a tour with Bieber, who co-wrote the song Beautiful on her new album Kiss, and she's been nominated for an American Music Award.
As she told Ian Hanomansing of CBC News, she's not letting it go to her head.
