Iranian youth dancing to Pharell Williams' 'Happy' given suspended sentences

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 19 September 2014 | 22.19

Six young Iranian men and women videotaped dancing to Pharrell Williams' "Happy" and the homemade video's director have been sentenced to suspended jail terms and 91 lashes each, their lawyer said Friday.

The Iranians' case attracted international attention when they were detained in May for participating in a production deemed indecent by hard-liners in Iran. The video showed the men and women, none of whom wore obligatory headscarves, dancing together in sunglasses and silly clothes on Tehran rooftops and alleyways.

The suspended sentences mean that verdicts against the defendants won't be carried out unless they commit crimes and are found guilty in the next three years.

Lawyer Farshid Rofugaran said the seven received suspended sentences of six months in jail and lashes. He said the suspended jail term was punishment for acting in the video and the lashes for ignoring Islamic norms.

"My clients did act in a video and their actions are contrary to religious requirements but are not crimes to deserve legal punishment. Saying prayers is a religious obligation in Islam but no one gets jail terms for not saying prayers," he told The Associated Press on Friday.

"The happy part of the verdict is that it's a three-year suspended sentence. The verdicts won't be carried out unless my clients are found guilty in a court of law for the next three years," he said.

The lawyer said one of the defendants also received another suspended sentence of six months over charges of possessing alcohol, which is banned in Iran. He said one of his clients kept industrial alcohol needed for his job, which is legal, but did not possess alcohol to drink.

Rofugaran said he learned of the verdicts from the judge's office and expects a formal announcement soon. He said he will have 20 days to appeal the sentence once he receives the written verdict.

The seven men and women were arrested in May but released soon afterward.

Laws in the Islamic Republic ban women from dancing in public or appearing outside without covering her hair with the hijab.

The arrests in May drew widespread criticism. Williams himself weighed in, tweeting at the time that it was "beyond sad these kids were arrested for trying to spread happiness."

An Iranian police chief, Hossein Sajedinia, called the video "a vulgar clip" which "hurt public chastity" and urged Iranian youth to avoid such acts.

Hard-liners have accused moderate President Hassan Rouhani of failing to stop the spread of what they deem "decadent" Western culture in Iran. They've marched numerous times in Tehran streets to protest women not being sufficiently veiled and dressing provocatively.

While Rouhani pursues a policy of social and cultural openness, hard-liners say the government should be tough on those who challenge strict interpretations of Islamic norms. They accuse Rouhani of showing leniency and too much tolerance toward those who question Islamic sanctities or women who are not sufficiently.

A Tribe Called Red cancels performance at human rights museum

A Tribe Called Red has pulled out of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights' opening festivities this weekend, citing concerns about how the museum portrays aboriginal issues.

The museum announced late Thursday that the group, which was supposed to perform at a concert Saturday evening, "has elected not to participate over concern around the way Indigenous issues are presented in the Museum."

"We know that building dialogue and earning trust is a long-term process, and we hope this will again be an opportunity for respectful conversation on issues that historically haven't been easy to talk about," officials said in a statement.

A Tribe Called Red was slated to perform on Saturday evening as part of RightsFest, a weekend of music, dance, art and more that will follow the museum's opening ceremonies on Friday.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights deeply regrets that A Tribe Called Red will no longer take part in the Museum's opening weekend programming.

"The CMHR understands the group has elected not to participate over concern around the way Indigenous issues are presented in the Museum," the CMHR said in a statement. "We know that building dialogue and earning trust is a long-term process, and we hope this will again be an opportunity for respectful conversation on issues that historically haven't been easy to talk about."

The Museum has extended an invitation to A Tribe Called Red to tour the CMHR at their convenience to experience for themselves the full breadth of exhibit content dedicated to Indigenous perspectives and issues.

Museum officials noted that input and community engagement with Indigenous Peoples across Canada is ongoing, with the goal to become a broadly representative and accessible public resource on Indigenous issues. Indigenous perspectives, struggles and themes are included on every level of the building and reflected in the Museum's architecture.

Cultivating trust and understanding is an essential part of the CMHR's mandate, the Museum said, which will be achieved through continued discussion and dialogue.

Liam Neeson is 'refreshing' in A Walk Among the Tombstones

Liam Neeson's new action flick is 'a twisted tale worth following' says CBC's film critic

CBC News Posted: Sep 19, 2014 5:00 AM ET Last Updated: Sep 19, 2014 8:13 AM ET

Liam Neeson is back on the big screen this weekend in Scott Frank's A Walk Among the Tombstones.

The Irish actor has developed a reputation for revenge roles ever since he kicked butt across Europe in Luc Besson's Taken series.

Now, Hollywood's favourite angry man plays Matthew Scudder, the recovering alcoholic ex-cop from Lawrence Block's bestselling crime novels.

Unlike Neeson's unstoppable hero in Taken, Scudder is a man beaten down by life but still blundering ahead.

The character's faults give a refreshing depth to what's become a familiar role for the actor.

"It's Philip Marlowe meets Fletch as he stumbles toward a solution," says CBC film critic Eli Glasner.

A Walk Among the Tombstones is in theatres Friday.

Canada's Oscar contender announced today in Montreal

Xavier Dolan's Mommy a likely choice when TeleFilm reveals Canada's Oscar contenter today

The Canadian Press Posted: Sep 19, 2014 8:34 AM ET Last Updated: Sep 19, 2014 8:49 AM ET

Canada's contender for Oscar glory in the best foreign-language film category will be announced today in Montreal.

The selection by a 23-member jury composed of major government agencies and national film associations will be announced by Telefilm Canada.

Observers say a top contender for the nod is Mommy, by 25-year-old Quebec director Xavier Dolan.

He shared the Jury Prize with French legend Jean-Luc Godard and his film when Mommy premiered at the Cannes film festival earlier this year.

Mommy tells the story of a mother's complex relationship with her troubled son.

Other possibilities include Charles Binamé's The Elephant Song — which starred Dolan in an acting role — as well as An Eye For Beauty, the latest from Oscar winner Denys Arcand.

Buzz has also surrounded Stephane Lafleur's quirky comedy Tu dors Nicole.

Albert Shin's In Her Place was the subject of Oscar chatter at the recent Toronto International Film Festival, which is considered a key event in the lead-up to Oscar lobbying season.

Canada has been submitting films for consideration by the Academy for Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since 1971.

Canada has had three nominees make the final Oscar cut in the last five years with Incendies in the running at the 2011 ceremony; Monsieur Lazhar in 2012; and War Witch in 2013.

Rob Ford The Musical producer says 'show must go on' 2:27

Rob Ford's doctors are about to give a much-anticipated update on the Toronto mayor's health, but it seems there is no question about the future of the musical comedy about his life.

The mostly sold out production of Rob Ford the Musical: Birth of a Ford Nation will open as planned Thursday night, regardless of Wednesday's health update.

"The show must go on, and the show will go on," said Brett McCaig, the show's writer and producer.

"We did make some alterations to the show. We addressed the situation that is happening now, in a very small way, and we changed the ending."

McCaig said Tuesday's preview of the musical was warmly received by the audience and that the show's run is largely sold out.

Rob Ford the Musical opens Thursday, with dates through Sept. 28.

Accident happened Monday night on Burnaby, B.C. set of popular sci-fi TV show

An accident on the Vancouver-area set of a popular science-fiction television series connected to Steven Spielberg has claimed the life of a security guard.

Scott McCloy of WorkSafeBC says the accident happened Monday night on the Burnaby, B.C., set of the TV series, Falling Skies.

He says a five-ton truck was parked on a slope, with its tailgate down to unload equipment, when the vehicle rolled backwards and pinned the worker to a tree.

McCloy says the unidentified worker was taken to Royal Columbia Hospital in New Westminster, B.C., but died of his injuries.

Turner Entertainment Networks says in a statement it is saddened by the tragic event and expresses its condolences to the security guard's family.

Falling Skies tells the fictitious story about the aftermath of an alien attack on the world, and its executive production team includes Spielberg and other members of DreamWorks Television.

John Travolta says gay lawsuit is based on greed

John Travolta has publicly addressed speculation about his sexuality, brushing off allegations that he's gay in a lawsuit filed by his former pilot.

"It's just about people wanting money," said The Pulp Fiction star in a recent interview with The Daily Beast.

It's the first time the married Hollywood actor, who was recently in Canada promoting his new movie The Forger, has spoken about the lawsuit filed by Douglas Gotterba.

Gotterba, who worked for Travolta for six years in the '80s, is reportedly working on a tell-all book about the alleged affair, and his lawyers are challenging a confidentiality clause in his termination agreement.

The 60-year-old celebrity, however, admits he doesn't work too hard to fight the rumour mill.

"I don't care that much about it," he told The Daily Beast. "Other people may attack it back more than I do, but I let all the media stuff go a long time ago because I can't control it."

Travolta, whose teenage son, Jett, died suddenly in 2009, said he was offended by the media coverage surrounding the tragedy.

"Sex stuff is always going to be interesting to somebody, but you stay away from family. You really should," insisted Travolta.

"I always felt like the media—not all of the media, but parts of it—went too low there."

Jett Travolta died after suffering a seizure at the family's vacation home in the Bahamas.

After the death, two residents were accused of trying to extort the star by threatening to sell stories to the media that implied his son's death was Travolta's fault.

The judge in the case later dismissed the charges at the actor's request. In a statement, Travolta explained that the case was taking a "heavy emotional toll" on his family.

Jackie Chan's son Jaycee formally arrested in drug case

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 17 September 2014 | 22.19

Police in Beijing have formally arrested the son of Hong Kong martial arts film star Jackie Chan on suspicion of allowing other people to consume drugs, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of three years' imprisonment, prosecutors said Wednesday.

The Dongcheng District prosecutor's office said it had given approval for the formal arrest of actor Jaycee Chan following a request from police a week earlier. It made the announcement on its official Sina Weibo microblog.

Jaycee Chan, 31, became the highest profile celebrity to be ensnared in an anti-drug crackdown by Chinese authorities when he was detained on Aug. 14 along with Taiwanese movie star Ko Kai. Police said a few days later that both actors had tested positive for marijuana and admitted using the drug, and that 100 grams of it were taken from Chan's home.

In China, police need official approval from prosecutors to formally arrest a suspect. During a period of formal arrest, police can continue to investigate. If they decide to criminally charge him, a trial would follow. The maximum sentence for allowing others to take drugs in a property, workplace or hotel is three years' imprisonment.

Ko, 23, was given a sentence of 14 days in administrative detention after he admitted using marijiuana.

On his release, he appeared at a news conference with his parents and agent and apologized for smoking the drug.

Jackie Chan, who was named an anti-drug ambassador in 2009 by Chinese authorities, has publicly apologized for his son's drug use and pledged to work with him on his recovery.

A series of celebrities have been detained on drug charges following a declaration in June by President Xi Jinping that illegal drugs should be wiped out and that offenders would be severely punished.

Performing arts associations and theatre companies in Beijing have pledged not to hire any actors connected with drugs, and national associations representing film actors, directors and producers have reportedly issued a notice saying members who repeatedly take drugs will be expelled and banned from making movies.

CBC News Posted: Sep 17, 2014 8:39 AM ET Last Updated: Sep 17, 2014 8:39 AM ET

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes welcomed a baby girl into the world on Friday, according to a report in Us Weekly.

The 33-year-old Canadian star of The Notebook and the 40-year-old Training Day actress had kept quiet about the pregnancy.

According to the magazine, Mendes brushed off rumours she was expecting in an interview on Ellen seven months ago.

"It's so ridiculous," she told host Ellen DeGeneres. "It all started because I didn't want to go through the scanners at the airport," Mendes explained.

The couple is staying characteristically mum on the baby, too. Neither star has issued an official statement announcing the birth.
