Acrobat dies during Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil performance

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 02 Juli 2013 | 22.19

A Cirque du Soleil acrobat died Saturday evening in Las Vegas during the final scene of its production KÀ.

Sarah (Sassoon) Guillot-Guyard, a 31-year-old mother of two, fell an estimated 15 metres from the stage at the MGM Grand Hotel after she slipped out of a safety harness.

Visitor Dan Mosqueda of Colorado Springs, Colo., said the acrobat was being hoisted up the side of the stage when it appeared that she slipped free of her safety wire and plummeted to an open pit below the stage.

"Initially, a lot of people in the audience thought it was part of the (show)," he told the Las Vegas Sun. "But you could hear screaming, then groaning, and we could hear a female artist crying from the stage."

The show momentarily continued, then stopped. Minutes after the accident, a recorded announcement informed audience members that refunds or vouchers to future shows would be offered, and the crowd was dismissed.

"I am heartbroken. I wish to extend my sincerest sympathies to the family. We are all completely devastated with this news," said Guy Laliberté, founder of the Quebec-based troupe.

"Sassoon was an artist with the original cast of KÀ since 2006 and has been an integral part of our Cirque du Soleil tight family," he said. "Our focus now is to support each other as a family."

The Clark County coroner's office in Las Vegas confirmed the death of the French-born acrobat.

Guillot-Guyard is the second Cirque du Soleil acrobat to die in an accident, and the first during a performance. Oleksandr Zhurov died in Montreal after a training accident in 2009.

The show is cancelled until further notice.

3 sex abuse suits against ex-Elmo puppeteer dismissed

Three lawsuits brought by men who said a former Elmo puppeteer sexually abused them when they were underage were tossed out by a judge who said in a decision published Monday that the men waited too long to sue.

U.S. District Judge John G. Koeltl said the claims must be barred because they came more than six years after each man reasonably should have become aware of Kevin Clash's alleged violations and more than three years after each turned 18. One other lawsuit is pending in Pennsylvania.

Clash resigned from "Sesame Street" in November after college student Cecil Singleton sued him for more than $5 million, accusing Clash of having sex with him when he was 15.

At the time, Clash said he was leaving his job because "personal matters have diverted attention away from the important work 'Sesame Street' is doing."

Clash was the man behind Elmo, the popular furry red monster, for 28 years.

Singleton's lawsuit was among those thrown out Monday. Koeltl also rejected lawsuits brought by Kevin Kiadii, who claimed that Clash initiated contact with him on a gay chat line in 2004 when he was 16, and a third person, a Florida resident, who remained anonymous in his lawsuit as he claimed that Clash befriended him in late 1995 or early 1996 when he was 16 or 17.

Sex with a person under age 17 is a felony in New York if the perpetrator is 21 or older.

Claims expired between 2000 and 2010

Koeltl said Singleton's claim expired in 2009, Kiadii's claim became time-barred at some point between 2008 and 2010 and the case brought anonymously would have expired between 2000 and 2002.

Adam D. Horowitz, an attorney for the men who brought the lawsuits, noted that the case was dismissed only on statute of limitations grounds.

"It should not be viewed as a vindication for Kevin Clash or a determination that he is innocent," Horowirz said. He added that lawyers were "still hearing from more of his alleged victims."

Jeff Herman, another lawyer for the plaintiffs, said he would appeal. He called the statute of limitations "an arbitrary timeline that silences victims."

A lawyer for Clash did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In the ruling, the judge said that the time in which someone must bring a lawsuit accumulates after the victimization rather than when the individual realizes subsequent psychological harm.

Otherwise, he said, plaintiffs could make claims decades later.

"While the plaintiffs may not have recognized the extent of their injuries, they were aware of the defendant's conduct toward them and could have brought claims," Koeltl wrote.

Mark Burnett's The Bible miniseries set for NBC sequel

NBC says it will air a sequel to the hit cable miniseries The Bible.

The network said Monday that it will join with producer Mark Burnett and his actress-wife, Roma Downey, on the sequel. Burnett and Downey produced The Bible for the History channel.

Downey starred in Touched by an Angel and also played Jesus Christ's mother, Mary, in the miniseries that aired earlier this year.

NBC says the sequel has the working title A.D.: Beyond the Bible and will open in the days following Christ's death.

Casting and an air date haven't been announced.

Burnett's producing credits include the NBC series The Voice and Celebrity Apprentice.

Canadian superhero Captain Canuck rises again

Comic book fans can easily rhyme off names like Superman and The Avengers, but a Canadian team is hoping a new revamp will put Captain Canuck back in the mix.

The Canadian hero, who debuted on comic book shelves almost 40 years ago, is making a comeback in a new animated web series debuting — fittingly — on Canada Day at captaincanuck.com.

Back in the early 1970s, as industry leaders Marvel and DC Comics were putting out stories about Spider-Man, Batman and Superman, Winnipeg-based artist Richard Comely and his artist friend Ron Leishman were wondering why there wasn't yet a Canadian counterpart.

"We would talk and he said 'There should be a Canadian superhero.' I said 'Duh! Yeah! Why isn't there [one]?'" Comely recalled to CBC News.

In 1975, the self-published indie comic Captain Canuck made its debut.

"It was really big, much more than I expected," Comely said. "Canadian media certainly was very interested and so was American media. And it sold very well … it just sold out everywhere."

Though the title eventually lapsed, a new group of creators — with the approval of Comely — is reviving Captain Canuck in an online series, featuring the voice of actor Kris Holden-Ried, best known for TV hits Lost Girl and The Tudors. Laura Vandervoort, Tatiana Maslany and Paul Amos are also taking on voice roles for the initial five-episode run.

In the video above, Richard Comely tells CBC's Eli Glasner about the early days of Captain Canuck.

Marvel favourite Wolverine aside, comic book heroes hailing from Canada have largely been overshadowed by the likes of Spider-Man, The X-Men or Batman. In the photo gallery above, CBC News takes a quick look at more Canadian comic heroes.

Tune in to the July 1 edition of The National as Eli Glasner reports on the super fans propelling the homegrown hero from the comics to the web.

Canada Day celebrations: From Chris Hadfield to Carly Rae

Entertainers Carly Rae Jepsen and the Tragically Hip, as well as recently retired astronaut Chris Hadfield, are among the personalities helping usher in the country's 146th birthday today, and the celebrations extend beyond Canadian borders.

In Ottawa, more than 350,000 Canadians are expected to converge on Parliament Hill for Canada Day festivities Monday. Lineups for a good spot to take in the entertainment began as early as 4:30 a.m. ET.

Political dignitaries such as Prime Minster Stephen Harper and Gov. Gen. David Johnston will also be part of the celebrations.

"We are fortunate for so many reasons to call this great country Canada our home," Harper said in a taped message. "We have a country of abundant resources and noble heritage, a country where people of all backgrounds are given both the tools and the opportunities to flourish, a country that serves as a model of freedom, harmony and prosperity the world over."

Between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m., Call Me Maybe singer Jepsen and indie rock band Metric will be among the Canadian musicians performing. As well, Hadfield will join Barenaked Ladies' Ed Robertson in a special musical performance.

Other high-profile Canadians also taking part in the celebrations include double-lung transplant recipient Hélène Campbell, who has championed organ donation around the world.

July 1 celebrations in Canada and beyond

While there are celebrations across Canada, they are also being held outside the country.

For instance, in London, England, where about 85,000 Canadians live, Canada House in Trafalgar Square will be treated to entertainment by the Tragically Hip, the Sheepdogs, Hamilton rock band Arkells, Jann Arden, and the Alberta drum and vocal group Northern Cree Singers.

Other festivities across Canada include:

  • Vancouver's Canada Place festivities begin at 10 a.m. PT, with a parade at 7 p.m. and a fireworks show at 10:30 p.m.
  • In Calgary, celebrations start at 10 a.m. MT, with some events relocated to Shaw Millennium Park because of flood recovery efforts in the city.
  • Edmontonians will be treated to a fireworks show over the city's river valley parks and the North Saskatchewan River at 11 p.m. MT.
  • In Regina, the Royal Canadian Artillery will kick off the festivities in Wascana Park at noon CT with a 21-round gun salute, and The Trews will cap off an afternoon of musical performances at 8:30 p.m.
  • In Winnipeg, the entertainment begins at the Forks at 1 p.m. CT. In the evening, local indie band Imaginary Cities will team up with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra for a performance that will lead into a fireworks show at 11 p.m.
  • In Toronto at Mel Lastman Square, a concert and fireworks display will be held beginning at 5 p.m. ET.
  • The Old Port of Montreal will host a fireworks display at 10:15 p.m. ET, following a day of musical performances that begins at 11 a.m.
  • In Quebec City, Canada Day celebrations will take place on the Plains of Abraham, with games, shows, and fireworks later in the evening.
  • In Moncton, celebrations get underway with a bike ride at 11 a.m. AT, followed by a concert headlined by Colin James at Main Street and Riverfront Park, and a fireworks display at 10 p.m.
  • In Dartmouth, N.S., live music by Skratch Bastid, Paper Lions, Gloryhound, The Elwins and Tokyo Police Club will begin at 5 p.m. at Alderney Landing, with a fireworks show over Halifax harbour set for 10 p.m.
  • Charlottetown's Victoria Park will host events beginning at noon AT, with live music and a fireworks show at 10 p.m.
  • In Yellowknife, Somba K'e Civic Plaza will host celebrations between 12:30 MT and 4 p.m.
  • In Iqaluit, festivities begin with a pancake breakfast and flea market, then a Canada Day Parade.

Paul Gross, Ronnie Hawkins among Order of Canada appointees

Actor Paul Gross, former P.E.I. premier Alexander Campbell and legendary rocker Ronnie Hawkins are among 74 appointees to the Order of Canada announced Friday.

The three are among 34 people named as officers of the order, the second-highest grade.

Hawkins's appointment is honorary because although he has lived in Canada for five decades, he remains an American citizen. Hawkins was cited for his contributions to the music industry, as well as for his support of charities.

Other recipients of the designation of officers of the Order of Canada include Céline Galipeau, a news anchor for Radio-Canada, and Olympic rower Marnie McBean.

Galipeau was cited for her "contributions to Canadian journalism, notably as a foreign correspondent."

McBean is best known for earning a pair of gold medals in Barcelona in 1992 and adding a third in Atlanta in 1996.

Toronto filmmaker Deepa Mehta was appointed an officer for her contributions as a groundbreaking screenwriter, director and producer.

CBC's Bernie Lucht was made a member of the Order of Canada for his work in public broadcasting. The award-winning radio producer was commended for providing a "forum for intellectual discourse and debate."

Queen's University biology professor John Smol is being honoured for his work on lake ecosystems.

Quebec actress and singer Carole Laure is another new officer.

Ottawa law professor Nathalie Des Rosiers, the general counsel of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, joins as a member.

Two veteran political operatives, Liberal Eddie Goldenberg and Conservative Jodi White, were also named as members of the order.

Clare Drake, who coached University of Alberta hockey teams to a slew of titles, is also a new member.

Retired admiral Larry Murray, who served briefly as acting chief of the defence staff and then became a senior public servant, is another member.

The recipients will be formally invested with their insignia at a later date.
